Dong Hyun Kim managed to last just 47 seconds before clutching his ribs and verbally tapping out of his UFC 148 bout against Demian Maia. Upon first glance, the prevailing thought was that Kim suffered a rib injury on the receiving end of a Maia takedown, which ensuing video replays appeared to support.

However Brian Rhee, Kim's translator and the manager of fellow countryman Chan Sung Jung, visited "Stun Gun" in the hospital following the event, and according to him, it was actually a "severe muscle spasm" that occurred 30 seconds into the bout which ultimately proved to be Kim's undoing.

I thought it was a rib, then I heard Maia say something about his neck when he took him down and I saw the replay and Kim's fell pretty hard and awkward on his neck too.

Very disappointing to have that happen to him.

This is the kind of loss that'll be intelligently accounted by the UFC brass. If there's room on a card, I think these guys should rematch (as I said in another thread). Both like to stand and bang, and Kim's standup looked way better in the Pierson fight (which really was a great opponent to test emerging skills). And both are good on the ground in their own ways.

Either way, I hope Kim heals up soon, and I'm glad to hear it was a muscle spasm. Broken ribs are among the most painful and debilitating injuries out there, especially for a fighter.

Should have farted before the fight started and not held it in.

Crazy. Not meaning to take anything away from Maia, but I was wondering how Kim was taken down so easily. My friends were convinced it was the knee on the ribs, but I wasn't so sure. I accepted the conclusion because it was the only explanation at the time. A severe muscle spasm...

Lets just all agree Maia's BJJ is soooooo good he straight subbed him with that takedown.
