Rightly or wrongly, trainer Greg Jackson caught some of the flak after Clay Guida delivered a lackluster performance in a split-decision loss to Gray Maynard at UFC on FX 4.

"(Clay) still got a split decision. He was a 4-1 underdog. Had we done just a little more, I think it would have gone our way. But [some criticism] is obviously just biased because no one's saying, ‘Hey Greg, that was a great game plan with Cub. Way to get the second knockout of his career and Knockout of the Night and look so good.' It's all about the negative stuff. At that point, it doesn't hold any water for me, so I'm all right."

"I wanted Clay to engage a little bit more, but I think Clay was waiting for him to open up a little bit. ...I chalk it up to experience and a learning process, and hopefully we won't be in that situation again where we have such a close decision. Hopefully we'll be able to dominate the next time.

...."I'm always going to be trying to do it smartly. It's got to be an entertaining fight obviously, but at the same time you can't just jump on somebody that's stronger than you, that hits harder than you and has better wrestling than you do."

I think we all did.

Let's blame Jason Guida too.

I don't agree with comparing Cub's win to Clay's loss. Sure, Greg may have a gameplan set for certain situations Cub may come across, but Cub always has a set brawling like style, while Guida's style changed completely due Greg's gameplan, which looked to be the same as Condit's against Diaz. We usually see Guida move foward and constantly pressure his opponent. We saw none of that against Gray, because that wasn't Guida. Cub's win is more centered around Cub being a great fighter. Guida's loss is centered around a terrible gameplan.

I blame everyone but Jason, his pre-fight slaps to his brother were the hardest shots landed in that travesty they called a fight.

"waiting for him to open up a little bit" - Jackson

Was Jackson watching the fight? Maynard could not have been more open after each of his lunging punches. Also, dropped his hands and let Guida land punches. Doesn't get much more open than that.

If it wasn't for Maynard letting him punch him and then stuffing the takedown into that sub, the staredown would have been the most exciting part of that fight

Greg was just trying to explain how people only focus on the negative.

On a side note...I get a kick out of this "we" business. I am a martial arts student and an instructor also so I understand fully well that fighters have coaches and trainers who come up with game plans but I just hate when they say "we".
