“This isn’t one of the biggest sporting events of the summer; it’s one of the biggest sporting events of the year.”

That’s a fairly lofty claim by UFC president Dana White, considering it encompasses the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the World Series, and, this year, the Summer Olympics; but it is a claim he made.

The UFC is pulling out all the stops for the UFC 148 rematch between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and challenger Chael Sonnen, who square off July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Not only is the UFC promoting it as its top event of the year, they’re also promoting a UFC Fan Expo around it and partnered with the city of Las Vegas for International Fight Week with a plethora of fan events all week long leading up the fight.

The biggest event ever in the promotion’s history to date was UFC 100, where Brock Lesnar defeated Frank Mir and Georges St-Pierre beat Thiago Alves.

UFC 100 reportedly pulled in 1.6 million pay-per-view buys, a live gate over $5 million, and drew just under 11,000 fans to the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

White expects UFC 148 to rival that event.

“There’s no doubt that we plan on doing over a million (PPV) buys here. We expect UFC 100 numbers,” he boldly predicted on Monday.

Doubt it.

I think too much time has passed.

That's just how I see it, though.

Don't know any two you could put up there to beat the draw of Lesnar & GSP.

Ya I think it'll do great but not as good as UFC 100. I think it would have a better shot if it still had Franklin vs Le and Faber vs Cruz or Barao but as we know shit happens. This is definitely the biggest fight of the year though so you never know.

I think Silva vs Sonnen II will shatter records. If you like WWE, you'll like Sonnen. If you like trash talk, you'll like Sonnen. If you like Drama, you'll like Sonnen.

This is a fight between the P4P fighter of the world and the most badass figure in mma. Who is not going to watch this fight?

It's got a nice secondary fight with Tito's retirement but to push this over the top it needs a Co-Main event equal to the level of UFC 100. Maybe if they still had Overeem they could have had him fight JDS, or Jones vs Hendo would have done it.

But, Sonnen won't bring over the WWE fans like Lesnar did.

2 title fights > 1 title fight + rubbermatch most people don't care to see

From MMAPayout:

"The UFC has not hit 1 million PPV buys since Brock Lesnar lost the Heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 on October 21, 2010. For those wondering, UFC 100 received 1.6 million buys on July 11, 2009.

The first Silva-Sonnen bout at UFC 117 in Oakland received 600 PPV buys. If you recall, Sonnen did most of the talking in hyping the fight as Silva was coming off of an embarrassing title defense in Abu Dhabi.

It seems like we’re getting a huge push for UFC 148 as this PPV may be the only one currently set that may hit 1M PPV buys. The UFC may get another shot with Jones-Hendo on September 1st but it happens Labor Day weekend and no other fights of note have been set. Certainly for 148, Silva’s trash talk should spur the venom between the two. As a result, many fans will definitely be interested in tuning in."

I think Anderson will win by round 1 brutal KO.
I would love to see Sonnen take this though. Imagine the post fight speech he would give.
