The former middleweight “Ace” was slated to face Cung Le at UFC 148 on July 7. Instead, he obliged the promotion’s request and moved up his calendar by two weeks, walking into hostile territory and taking a unanimous decision against Wanderlei Silva in a190-pound catch-weight contest at Felipe Drumond Stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

The win marked Franklin’s first in-cage appearance in 18 months and his first win in two years. The Ohio native had been sidelined since injuring his shoulder last summer while preparing for a meeting with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 133.

His “Fight of the Night”-winning performance now behind him, Franklin says that he hopes to finish his career at middleweight, ideally with a belt around his waist.

The UFC didn’t want to do a third fight between Anderson and me, and that was understandable. I lost both of those fights pretty convincingly, but enough time has passed now,” said Franklin. “I’m not going to be able to make a title run at 205 [pounds]. I’m just not big enough. So, I talked to the UFC about dropping back down to 185. If I can put some wins together, then maybe we’ll shoot for a title before I retire. I’m 37, and I’m getting up there in years.

Theres no way imo he's going to win the MW title as long as Silva is in the UFC

If he keeps racking up exciting wins, I'm all for it. Silva can't have the belt if Rich challenges for it though. If Sonnen manages to win that's a fight I'd love to see down the road.

but its not just Silva that he probably wouldn't beat. I feel like guys like Munoz, Belfort, and Sonnen would all beat him (Belfort already has). But that doesn't mean that I don't want him to fight those fights. Franklin always keep it interesting with everyone but Anderson

I dont think Franklin haas a chance against any of the top middleweights right now. Munoz, Weidman, Belcher, Stann, Lombard, Sonnen, Belfort, and especially A. Silva would all handle him relatively easily I think. No chance at a title but I do like him as a fighter.

I think he is seriously underrated, I doubt he'll ever win a title again but he's still a top ten middleweight and possibly a top 5 if he brings the right game plan to most of these fights.

Agreed. Besides the Griffin loss, what loss on his record makes him be written off so quickly? I can't believe these words are coming out of my mouth but Mike Goldberg said it best. Franklin has only lost to champions. I've never once thought, "Man, Franklin doesn't stand a chance here." He's a killer. Franklin comes to fight every single time and has fought a who's who list of veterans and has come out with a 29-6 record. I'd give him more than a chance to beat any fighter the Middleweight division has to offer.

Rich could easily make a run at a MW title. Better chance there than at 205. I still feel like he could run through that whole division, besides Anderson.
