Rich Franklin said he didn't think cage rust would be an issue after a 16-month layoff, and he proved to be right. Instead, the issue was a resilient Wanderlei Silva, whom Franklin had to survive to win a unanimous decision on Saturday night in the pair's rematch. The 190-pound catch-weight fight took place at UFC 147 at Estadio Jornalista Felipe Drumond in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. It served as the main event on the pay-per-view following prelims that aired on Facebook and FX.

I heard a lot of people describe this fight as, "The fight nobody asked for and nobody wants to see." I was as entertained during that fight as I have been with just about any fight I've seen this year. Great performances turned in by both guys. Not too many dull moments.

That's so often what happens. Injuries force changes to a card that might not sound as appealing as the initial matchups, and the fights we get can turn out to be very entertaining.
Franklin looked as good last night as I've ever seen him. He showed much improved footwork with a sharp, accurate jab and improved combinations. Granted, I still think he needs to keep his hands up more, and he paid for it in the second round. But he was in control the rest of the fight, and had there been a little more time at the end, he might've finished Wandy or at least done so while in top position.
Wandy, well, what can you say? This is pretty much what I expected, and I don't mean that in a bad way. He's fighting a smart guy with underrated resilience and championship experience, so it's gonna be hard to put him away. That said, he stayed in there the entire time and remained dangerous, especially in the 5th.
Awesome gifs from last night. Rich's new haircut made him look even more like Jim Carrey, but this time it was Dumb & Dumber era. So good.
From here, I wouldn't be surprised if we get that original Franklin vs Le fight, though it doesn't make the most sense. MMA math and all, but Rich has beaten twice the guy who thumped Le. Still, styles make fights, and what makes Wandy dangerous against Le is the same thing that made him dangerous against Franklin. I think Franklin and Le are made for each other in that we'll get two tough guys who lean towards volume than power, and it would be a good test for Rich's evolving footwork.
Maybe Wandy fights Belfort after this. It's a little disappointing to delay it after the buildup this season, especially with Wandy being the underdog even before last night's loss.
I absolutely agree that Ferreira and Sarafian makes sense, sort of an unfinished business deal like with Bisping vs Hamill.
Werdum looked as good last night as he ever has, but I still think JDS takes him. Werdum's a big, strong HW with a good kick/clinch based attack, but he's a little plodding and JDS is among the fastest HWs. I'd put him up against Carwin first, depending on how his recovery's coming. Both like to stand and bang at about the same pace, with Carwin having a slight speed advantage (who thought I'd ever say that) due to his focus on punches. And Carwin's never been tested by a grappler like Werdum.

I wouldn't mind seeing Werdum/Mir but I think that Werdum Nog rematch is a long time coming as well, but if he can beat somehow beat Mir which I doubt, they could hype a JDS rematch, a third Alistair number 1 fight or if Cain were to win you've got a very cometitive contrast of strengths.

Werdum will walk through Mir with ease.

I enjoyed the main event. There were some good other fights, but overall not a PPV card, more like a FX or Fuel card. Making picks on fighters you have never heard of who have fought fighters you have never heard of wasnt easy. Basically a coin toss as records don't mean as much without knowing the level of competition. Also I didn't print out my fight companion and couldn't remember who I picked in half of the fights. Watching without having a favorite fighter in the fight and not knowing who you want to win isn't as much fun.

I think that depends entirely on what type of fight each guy fights. Mir/Nog was incredibly exciting both times. Mir/JDS looked like cat and mouse. Werdum/Nelson was super exciting...Werdum/Overeem...one of the worst fights I've ever seen. It just depends IMO. I could see that fight being exciting, and quite honestly if the UFC wants to put Werdum in a title match that's probably the fight he needs.
