“They offered Glover for us. I talked with my team and we decided that Glover would not be interesting right now. Glover is a top fighter, I know him, I respect him. But he just got into the UFC and he has only one fight in the UFC. He needs to get more fights. I had nothing to gain with that fight.

“We said to the UFC that for now this fight is not interesting to me. After that the UFC offered me Brandon Vera. But the UFC has never thought to cut me nor have I thought to leave the UFC. I’ve never picked my opponents. I’ve fought against the best and I want to keep doing it, to get my chance for the title.

“For sure Glover is a top fighter but today if I beat him then I would gain nothing so we decided to refuse this fight. But in the future, it can happen.”

He is right. There is nothing to gain from a win against a relatively unknown dangerous fighter for somebody already near the top of the heap. But the situation Shogun finds himself in now was that he accepted a fight against a familiar name that invites ridicule. At least there was a portion of the MMA audience that would have not been surprised if the first offer won.

I think this entire episode speaks to the lack of depth at light heavyweight.

He is saying what other people have already said on the forums here about it.

Although, Idk about the being cut part from Dana.

I wouldn't want to fight Tex, but odd though as Shogun has faced the other top guys. But I can see it gaining him nothing, but Vera doesn't gain him much more than Tex other than a possible win over a semi-more notacable name.

I'm sure Shogun wants to try and get a win after the Henderson loss. Doesn't want to be stuck with back to back losses.

if he was Henderson, Franklin, Ortiz or anyone who had "put time in", people wouldnt make a big deal about it.

im sure the fight will get brought up again in the future & he'll take it.

This is just so full of contradictions. He says he doesn't pick his fights, when that's exactly what he's doing here. A win over Teixera doesn't mean anything? It says a hell of a lot more than a win over Brandon Vera. Plus, which loss looks worse? Vera. Vera is not a name. He's not Randy, he's not Chuck, he's not Jon Jones.... He's a guy who's been around, and if you know him, it's because:

A) You know he had potential and fell off years ago
Or B) You've seen him get his ass kicked

Even if the "fans" don't know who the better win is, his employer does.

The stakes are pretty high at his spot on the latter, so I understand the decision from a business stand point. A loss plummets him to the bottom top ten status. It sucks from a fan stand point as you like to see guys fight anyone at anytime and now we are left watching Shogun kick the piss out of Vera for 15 minutes. The thing is with the Vera fight he's still in the same situation with nothing to gain and a lot to lose. The only difference is on paper it's a much easier fight.

I don't understand this statement at all. When Shogun was in Pride yea he took any fight because he only had EVERYTHING to gain. Shogun is an elite fighter, this is a business decision. If Shogun beats Teixeira, ok so what. Teixeira is still new and no one has even heard of him. If Shogun were to lose, the UFC would want to cut his pay. Shogun has absolutely nothing to gain from this fight. Brandon Vera is not that good but still, he is a relatively big name. Shogun fought Dangerous Dan Henderson, Jon Jones, and Machida twice, you have nothing to go on saying he is a coward. Stupid statement, and very smart decision by Shogun.

Im personally not a fan of turning down fights. When your a fighter and the UFC offers you a fight you take it no matter who its against everyone in the UFC is top notch and deserves there props. Saying the things that Shogun is saying about Glover discredits him and I disagree with it completely.

And on a side note Glover is a much better fighter than Vera
