After his dominating victory over Josh Barnett this past Sat., night (May 19, 2012), Daniel Cormier won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix title and in the process, staked his claim as a very dangerous fighter that all heavyweights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) ranks will have to contend with very soon.
In the interim, Cormier, who is undefeated at 10-0, still has business outside the Octagon to tend to. That's because even though he won the grand prix title and there are basically no more heavies in Strikeforce to contend with, the former Olympic wrestle tells The MMA Hour that he still has to compete once more with the San Jose-based promotion before he can make his eventual jump to the UFC.
But who can possibly fit the bill to face off against the current tournament champion?

I was just thinking Cormy vs Cain would be epic...then realized they won't fight. I think this is the next best thing though.

I'd like to see Carwin vs. Cormier. I'm interested to see how well he can take a punch from someone like Carwin and at the same time see just how big of an advantage he will have in the speed department.

I honestly think Cormier could take down Carwin at will; especially now that Carwin is coming off lower back surgery. That being said he seems to be game to strike with anyone so I doubt he lays and prays.

Good fight, lot tougher than Barnett though. Josh landed quite a few shots on Cormier...if Carwin does that you're going to sleep

They both train at AKA so don't count on it. Just what a thin division needs some more of...two top dogs who won't fight each other heh.

Yeah Cormier has publicly said he'd never fight Cain. Said he'd cut to 205 if Cain regained the title (though people have mixed opinions on how that cut would go).

Cormier is suited well for the heavy weight divsion. He is shorter which makes his center of gravity very strong and stable. My only concern is will he be able to nullify the heavy strikes from guys like Carwin and Junior.
Cormier's recent fights have shown he is a very intelligent and methodical fighter. If he continues to fight the way he has been, I would not be surprise if captures the ufc belt sometime in 2013. Cormier has two powerful weapons which are wrestling and speed. He can utilize his speed to out-maneuver and out-punch the mediocre strikers. He can utilize his speed and wrestling to grapple the better strikers in the division.
I think Cormier should stay in the HW division despite Cain. This is opportunity knocking and he has the recipe to become a ufc champion.
One more thing: Stylistically, the only guy in the HW division who I feel would pose a big threat to Cormier would be Struve. Everyone else would be a fairly even match and I would even go as far as giving the edge to Cormier.

He absolutely deserves a fighter with name value. At this point there's no need for him to take tune up fights as he's shown he can beat some of the very best.
Also, if I'm his manager/coach/whatever I'd tell him that he absolutely belongs at HW. He's wrestled heavy for years, and with his kidney issues the cut is just not worth the risk involved.

I think he would do pretty well against the UFC Heavies. But, I agree with Dana when he says he'd be a force at Light Heavy. Not sure if he's willing to do that but seems logical so him and Cain don't have to fight. Eventually they'd have to fight if they both stayed at Heavy.

I'm glad carwin is finally comming back and a matchup against comrier sounds good. I think there wrestling will cancel each other so it would be a stand up battle. I think cormier will have the speed advantage and pick carwin apart but carwin would be very dangerous in round 1.

No Ufc fighter is gonna wanna fight a one fight gig in strikeforce with out anything to gain.
This could be for number one contender status for next shot after Cain.
Either that or they sign a heavyweight outside Ufc for a one fight deal.
My guess would be Todd duffee
