Former top UFC fighter Nate Marquardt will finally make his Strikeforce and welterweight debut in July, and it will be in a title matchup. He will compete for Nick Diaz's old Strikeforce welterweight championship against a SF veteran, Tyron Woodley. MMA Weekly has it:

The main event for the upcoming Strikeforce event in July is almost set as Nate Marquardt will make his promotional debut against Tyron Woodley with the vacant welterweight title on the line.

Sources close to the match-up confirmed the fight to MMA Weekly on Monday with verbal agreements in place for the July showdown.

Depends who's judging. Woodley was on top of Mein every round and for over half the fight but only got a SD because he's not active from the top like a Chael. Marquardt on the other hand is an active fighter.

5 rounds for your first cut to 170 in a long time though is worrying.

I agree. This fight doesn't excite me at all as it is an obvious indicator that Zuffa isn't planning on assimilating Strikeforce yet. I hope when all of SF's TV and other contracts are up Zuffa will meld the SF fighters into the UFC and finally do away with it already. I hope they don't take as long as they did with WEC. I was actually hoping for a quick death like Pride and the IFL...but it seems they are going to drag it out.

Strikeforce has been around almost a decade longer than the UFC in the combat sports game. It'd be a shame if they shut it down. We'll find out when they fulfill their Showtime contract at the end fo this year. Zuffa is completely fine with co-promoting on Strikeforce cards too which could make more matches happen that can't in the UFC. It'd be pretty disappointing if they IFL'd it.

I hope they keep Strikeforce, but turn it into a minor league/feeder league for the UFC. Give up and comers a chance to prove they belong in the UFC on a national level versus regional fighters. The UFC could also send veterans down to Strikeforce when they are on a losing skid and give them a chance to turn it around, instead of just cutting them. It could be similar to baseballs minor leagues.

This is what I was hoping for with the Zuffa acquisition of Strikeforce. I think many others were too. And while I never really considered SF on the UFC's level, I remember when they used to put on good shows. Me and the guys must have had 25 people over for the Carano-Cyborg fight. I miss when they used to put on respectable shows.

Now it seems like the are doing a show maybe every four months with very little hype or fanfare. Most of their champions jumped ship. Ronda Rousey is probably their biggest star, which is great, but we don't even know what the future of WMMA is like as far as Zuffa's backing is concerned. Maybe I am just spoiled with the frequency and quality of UFC events... But I want Strikeforce to get back to where it was, or else I think they should just shelve the company and merge with the UFC when the Showtime contracts are up.

Don't be half steppin, Zuffa!
