In the realm of baseball names like Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Willie Mays are synonymous with most sports fans, but if you’ve ever heard the name Curt Flood, he’s a player that helped change baseball forever.

In 1969, Flood challenged the status quo of the contracts in Major League Baseball, and although it took a few years, the ultimately decision led to free agency in the national pastime.

Free agency has become commonplace in every sport from football to baseball to basketball and even mixed martial arts.

For Bellator Fighting Championships, they are about to feel the real bite of free agency for the first time in their 4 years of existence.

Former Bellator lightweight champion and arguably the face of Bellator Eddie Alvarez, along with middleweight champion Hector Lombard are both coming up to the end of their respective deals and now the organization has to get into the business of negotiating to keep two of their biggest and most popular stars...

Where could they go?

I could see Alvarez coming to the UFC, but not sure about UFC wanting Lombard.

As weak as MW is why wouldn't they want him? Not to mention the blow Bellator would take by losing him.

Yeah, if they don't snatch him up merely so Bellator can't have him, I'm willing to bet they at least drive his asking price up. Not to mention, if it wasn't for visa issues, Lombard would've already fought in the Octagon a couple of years ago.

Many dont know this, but Lombard was signed with the ufc once before. Was set to debut against Karo Parysian but visa issues stopped him from entering the US. Later on, Bellator scooped him up.

Just saying if they showed an interest once, I bet the ufc still has sights on Lombard. As for Alvarez, they'd be high not to scoop him up as well.

Lombard vs. Weidman sounds about right. I forget if Weidman has an opponent lined up right now...

Hector would get smashed and receive a pink slip after 3 fights.

Both fighters should be in the UFC. The UFC should be a be able to get a deal on Alvarez...I mean lets be real...his loss to Michael Chandler lowered his value just a little bit. While I feel both Lombard and Alvarez should rightly be in the UFC....it isn't necessarily the best thing for their careers. The UFC is the top of the heap....and I don't think Alvarez and Lombard would fare as well against the top guys in the world. If they do get signed by the UFC I don't think either of them will get past the middle rungs of their weight divisions. It needs to happen though.

I like the comparison here, but it's not really accurate. Flood didn't exactly bring about Free Agency. Flood brought about the 10/5 rule in baseball.

It wasn't until 1975 when Free Agency (as we understand it) was implemented and Flood had already been retired for over a half-decade by that time. It actually came about because of the Reserve Rule and uncontracted players playing for a full season with a team.

Flood fought the reserve rule, but his argument wasn't predicated on FA as much as it was his tenure in the league. Had Flood only had a couple years of service in the league, this would have gone largely ignored. It was because he had won 2 World Series' with the Cardinals and wanted to veto his trade that he challenged the Reserve Rule.

The Seitz Decision brought about Free Agency. Flood did not.

EDIT: I realize that this isn't about MMA, but I hate inaccuracies.

i think the ufc could use both, but with the LW div completely stacked alvarez could be passed up. i think lombards a shoe in just because of the lack of top MW fighters. i dont think lombard is ufc champ quality but i would definitely watch him in the octagon, same goes for alvarez.
