A top ten level middleweight will be dropping down to 170lbs to try and wreak havoc on the best of the best at welterweight.
Multi-time grappling champion Demian Maia has made the decision to drop down to welterweight following his last fight against Chris Weidman at UFC on Fox 3.
Maia made the announcement via his Twitter account on Wednesday.
“Guy, now I’ll (be) moving down to 170lbs,” wrote Maia. “Next fight I’ll be a welterweight.”

Maia was always one of the first names I would mention when people would ask who you think could move down a weight class.
I don't think the drop will be to hard for him, with his BJJ skills, this could cause a problem for some of the WW wrestlers.

Wow, didn't see that coming. I guess it kind of makes sense, his build will permit it and he isn't going to have to cut much muscle, or at least it looks like he is relatively small in the guns region. Hmmm Shields vs Maia?

his BJJ hasn't looked as sharp lately as it should have been...and with the amount of top control wrestlers in the division, he needs to get back to be the BJJ wizard he broke into the UFC as. He also needs to keep improving his striking otherwise guys like Koscheck, Pierce, and Sanchez who can keep the fight standing will pick Maia apart

If he plans on being a serious contender in the division he needs to go back to his BJJ roots. Welterweight is full of dedicated wrestlers who will keep him on his back unless they feel threatened.

I think this is a huge mistake honestly. He already cuts to make MW and his cardio issue isn't going to be sorted out like this. His issue is that he's so in love with his standup at this point that he doesn't bother with a ground game.

Bad move, his cardio was weak at 185. He'll get out wrestled and tire more quickly at 170.
Maia just figured that his chances of winning a belt is greater at 170....and I don't blame him.

I don't think a move to WW is warranted, I think he needs to take a look in the mirror and go back to what got him there in the first place... Superior BJJ. Easier said them done but that dude is a stud on the ground but he hasn't been using it, choosing to stand and trade and its cost him in a few fights

Idk about that, that would be comparable to saying two great boxers would both just equal each other out. I see the biggest issue being if either can get the take down.

Good move on his part IMO. Instead of floating around MW like hes been doing, why not start fresh in a new division

Totally agree.
I was going to agree with Bubles but then he had to go and add that bit about the striking.
Maia needs to worry LESS about striking and wrestling right now.
BJJ got him to the big time and made him the title contender.
If he wants to continue that success he needs to go back to BJJ. I would even recommend taking some time off to do straight jiu jitsu competitions.

If he doesn't attempt to improve on his striking, then how is he going to beat the glut of wrestlers in that division? He won't be able to take them down, and most of them are really good top position grapplers. He needs to focus 80% of his training back to BJJ - that is his bread and butter - but if he cant take his opponent down, how in the hell is he going to win? Any smart wrestler at WW will play sprawl and brawl against Maia
Also, I think it is in the UFC contract that fighters cannot compete in outside tournaments. I believe this was one of the reasons why Fedor went to SF over the UFC as he still wanted to compete in Sambo tournaments. Werdum and Gonzaga didn't compete in any BJJ tournaments while under contract either
