A man who tried to rob a mixed martial-arts expert at gunpoint found himself no match for his intended victim this weekend, police said.

Anthony Miranda, 24, faces a charge of discharging a weapon during a robbery in the Southwest Side attack, which left him wounded in the ankle and badly bruised from his confrontation with the 33-year-old man he robbed, police said.

The victim was sitting in his car near Kenneth Avenue and 55th Street about 11:30 p.m. Friday when a man came up to the car and asked him for a light, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

The man in the car replied that he didn't have a light, and the other man pulled out a handgun and demanded the driver's valuables, Mirabelli said. The driver handed over his cash, wallet and valuables, and the gunman then ordered him out of the car.

At some point, the older man was able to grab hold of the handgun, and during a struggle, the robber discharged a round, striking himself in the ankle, Mirabelli said.

The victim was able to hold the robber until police arrived. When he turned the robber over to police, the victim told them that he participates in Ultimate Fighting Championships, a mixed-martial arts competition, Mirabelli said.

At first I thought it was Stephan Bonnar, then I remembered he lives in Vegas now.

Who could it be? A 33 year old man living in Chicago who fights for the UFC.

Strange that none of the news sources mention his name. When Jones did something similar they told EVERYONE.

Munoz. He's 33 and he was in Chicago for the UFC on FOX 2 announcement. That's just me putting two and two together though. Could be a bunch of people.

I'd be interested to see who it was. We can't rule out the possibility that the person could be anyone in MMA though. I don't know how much MMA knowledge that guy has, but he could be of the "training UFC" mentality.

Edit: haha, and 10 seconds later, Josh and Tim are talking about training UFC on the podcast.

I guess thats true...

The article reads "When he turned the robber over to police, the victim told them that he participates in Ultimate Fighting Championships, a mixed-martial arts competition"

Maybe something just got misconstrued (like telephone when you were a kid.) It does sound like he actually fought for the UFC.

The local TV news said it was a "UFC champion" which I doubt is true.

Apparently the fighters name is Justin and he's originally from Romania.

I wonder if the description of him as an "Ultimate Fighting Champion" was actually the fighters words or the writers.

Good find. But I'm irritated.

Why is it that journalistic principles like fact checking get thrown out the window any time someone is talking about MMA?

It happens through out journalism you just notice it with mma because you are knowledgeable about the subject.

Justin from Romania doesn't show up in the UFC SF or Bellator. In fact no Romanians do. He also claimed to have military training. Honestly it could be anyone, there's a good chance most details are wrong since if someone claimed to be a football player the media would report NFL starter.

I read this a few days ago and my first thought was that it was just some guy that watches UFC talking tough. You know, like the guy that tells you he is really tough because he trained karate. But it turns out, that it was just that his mom put him in Karate lessons for a year when he was ten.

My point is I don't think this guy even trains MMA.
