Chris Leben gave it his best shot when he faced Mark Munoz at UFC 138. Leben scored with some punches, came close with a few submissions and even got a pair of takedowns over the much better wrester. In the end Munoz's skills were just too much though and Leben was forced to retire from the bout when he said he couldn't see due to vision problems stemming from a cut over his eye.

Now, Fighters Only Magazine is reporting that Leben had a terrible weight cut:

Chris Leben cut nearly 21 pounds in 24 hours to make weight for his fight with Mark Munoz, Fighters Only was told ahead of last night's bout.

The 31-year old middleweight had "a terrible weight cut" and was in such bad shape before the weigh ins that medical staff were keeping a very close eye on him.

A source close to Leben told Fighters Only on Friday that Leben had been left "shattered" by the amount of weight he had to cut on weigh-in day.

That explains why he was basically gassed at the 4-minute mark of the opening round. Sucks.

Do you think the fight would have gone differently had he come in lighter the day before the weigh in?

When I was watching the fight it was clear that Leben wasn't himself. I found it surprising that he even mentioned that he couldn't see. That seems like the last thing Leben would ever do, no matter how bad it was (Not blaming him because he made the right choice for sure). He was hating every minute of that fight and I guess this really explains why. Not the smartest way to handle a weight cut, hopefully it doesn't happen again.

I'm not taking anything away from Munoz though. He was game.

Ya. This doesn't seem like a post fight excuse to me. It totally makes sense.

He's usually got great conditioning.

Honestly, I think the end result would have been the same but the fight would've maybe gone a little longer. Not only was he gassed but he looked stiff and hesitant to me. Almost like the signal from his brain to his fists got lost somewhere in between and he couldn't pull the trigger.

Since this is coming from a "source close to Leben" I don't think I'd consider it an excuse (for now) but c'mon...first it was too much candy after weigh-ins leading up to the Stann fight and now he's cutting 21 pounds in 24 hours? He should know better.

I believes it because the info was leaked prior to the fight.....however that dude should have this down to a science by this time! Regardless, for his improper cutting he lost a big fight and should sink in the rankings for it.......you reap what you sow.

Where does he go from here? Stopped by both Stann and Munoz this year. That's a tough position to be in. Anyone else think a fight with Belcher makes sense? I know Belcher is on a 3 fight win streak and Leben is 1-2 in his last 3 but Leben would definitely be Belcher's toughest test to date and that fight has war written all over it.

Granted he did look gassed, but I think Leben was doing fine and seemed to be ramping up his attacks as per his usual style. I think he did fine in the fight, minus the gassing.

There are a ton of fights at Middleweight I'd like to see him in regardless of current win/loss streaks.

Leben vs. Alan Belcher
Leben vs. Cung Le
Leben vs. Tim Kennedy
Leben vs. Jason Miller
Leben vs. Vitor Belfort
Leben vs. Ed Herman
Leben vs. Luiz Cane
Leben vs. Tim Credeur

Do I believe Leben cut 21 lbs in 24 hours? No. I don't buy this at all.

my guess is that he was sick and had to stop training for a couple of weeks and that really hindered his training. Either way the crippler will be back in action sometime soon.

I noticed during the fight he was quite rigid and stiff. The way he positioned his shoulders looked awkward and I noticed something going on with his neck, like he didn't want to turn his head much. He kinda looked like a zombie in that fight.

I think Chris Leben has the capability to beat Mark Munoz, he just made poor decisions coming into and during this fight.

I think Leben would win every 6 out of 10 fights with Munoz.

I said the same thing to my girlfriend. I'm wondering if maybe he strained or pulled something earlier in the week.
