Is Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez (19-2 MMA, 9-1 SF) is moving to the UFC, it won't be before a Dec. 17 title fight with top contender Jorge Masvidal (22-6 MMA, 4-0 SF) .

UFC president Dana White, whose company acquired Strikeforce earlier this year, recently said he wants Melendez in the UFC as soon as possible.

But first, he'll headline an event that officials today announced: "Strikeforce" Melendez vs. Masvidal.".

Good, b/c I wanted this fight to still happen. Then if Melendez wins, he can come over and face Edgar.

I am glad this fight is still going down as well. I don't think it is right to rob Masvidal of the opportunity, especially when there are current UFC LWs that can challenge for the title while Gil defends against Masvidal and gets his contract situation figured out.

Whether you think Gil will win or whether you think that the Strikeforce belt has little meaning (as it becomes more and more obvious that Zuffa is going to fold Strikeforce), it should not prevent this fight from happening.

Excellent point. Many are getting too caught up in worrying about who is the best in the world at each weight class that some good fights are overlooked. People seem to forget that we watch fights because they rock, not because we demand to know who is really the number 1.

I'd hate to see Gil lose here before coming over to the UFC because I want to see him fight Frankie. If he drops this fight the Guida/Henderson winner definitely has to be next up for the LW strap, and that's fine too, but I'd rather see how Gil stacks up against the best right away.
