UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones (14-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) will fight in UFC 140's headliner, but it won't be against Rashad Evans (16-1-1 MMA, 11-1-1 UFC).

Injuries have cost Evans another promised title shot, and ex-champ Lyoto Machida (17-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) has taken his spot in the December title fight.

UFC president Dana White today announced the news via Twitter.

The new newly announced main event comes a day after news of a potential Jones vs. Evans UFC 140 headliner. A source told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) and other outlets that the fight was being targeted for the Toronto show. However, White ultimately told MMAjunkie.com that wouldn't be the case.

The guy has lost two of last three and gets a title shot
Good fight but machida didn't deserve this.
I can't remember last time a guy won a belt and defended it twice in a year as well

Jones has plenty of suiters in 2012. Evans, davis and henderson

1-2 in his last 3, and he gets a title shot, yeah that's silly... but i love the matchup, so i wont complain, hah.

Lyoto never lost his fight against Rampage anyway. Rampage admitted he lost.

i dont agree with giving him the title shot, but at least this peaks my interest and i may pony up the money for tickets

i really hope Machida wins simply because i dont like Jones

His record says otherwise. Rampage later after watching the fight said he won.

and Machida lost his first fight vs Shogun too. therefore he is 1-3 in his last 4 (Rampage won imo).

see how silly that sounds?

Whether he deserves it or not this is gonna be one hell of a fight. I think that Machida will be able to pull him into the later rounds and maybe even a decision but Jones will get the win.

I think the only way Machida wins, is if he can frustrate Jones enough that Jones does something stupid. But it is a long shot.

I'm actually pretty thrilled that the ufc can look beyond a fighter's record & see him for the talented fighter that he is.

I actually agree even though saying it sounds insane. but with rashad out he was really the only option and i am a lot more excited about this fight or scratch hendo/rua n throw hendo in there (give up one amazing fight for another in the hendo case). i guess tito got a morale victory over rashad being his head is so hard it boned rashad in the end... still think rashad so go down to MW though

I have been clamoring for this match up. I'm excited to see what Machida can do. His striking and his sumo base I think could pose some problems for Jones. Will he beat Jones? I don't think so, but I think it is probably the most interesting match at 205 right now for Jones.

I have nothing against this fight. Sure, Machida is coming off only one win, but everyone else is booked or injured. The card needed a title fight and now it has one. And it's a compelling match up. In my personal opinion Machida is the one guy that has a really solid chance of beating Jones right now. He's extremely elusive and his striking is top notch. I picture this fight being an absolute war after a reasonably slow first. I can't wait to see it.

This all comes as a surprise to me, after watching the rampage fight, I thought Jones would not be heavily challenged for at least 2 years with the grid lock (yes I am assuming rashad would be handled and Hendo/Shogun as well would be handled). I really like this fight, but yet again this bump to the front makes no sense. It makes it hard to take some of these titles seriously when some contender out of the blue is the title contender.

Rabble rabble aside, this or A Silva I thought would be the only possible good competitive fights for Bones. I don't like this just because it takes the magic away from hoping Machida can win, but I suppose since everyone is clamoring (including myself) that Machida would be his greatest challenge at 205, uncle Dana made it happen.

Finally, WAR MACHIDA

What? This is preposterous! A man undeserving of a title shot is getting one? No way. How can this type of thing happen in the UFC.

Who should have the shot? Davis is shelved, Evans is shelved, Henderson and Rua are fighting, and Jackson just got beat. Do you rest Jones for a year waiting for someone else? I think this is probably their only viable option. The face, or at least the person they're trying to make the face of the UFC(Jones), doesn't need to be on the sidelines for 6 months to a year.
