Maximo Blanco's Strikeforce stint will be a short one.

Following a loss to former welterweight Pat Healy at this past weekend's Strikeforce event, Blanco (8-3-1) is dropping from lightweight to featherweight and joining the UFC.

The fighter's management team at Sucker Punch Entertainment tweeted the news on Tuesday.

"[Blanco] will be back strong, very soon, this time at 145 pounds in the UFC," the message read.

UFC officials have not formally announced the move.

At first I thought it was a strange decision considering he's coming off a loss, but now that I think about it he was undersized against Pat, and the move down in weight should work wonders for him.

Agreed. He was doing nicely in the first round of that fight. His strikes were quick and could cause a lot of problems for a lot of guys. He needs to work on the sub defense though. At 145 he isn't going to run into the wrestling problem and in fact be able to use his effectively on guys. He needs to work on his conditioning as well.

I like his chances much better at 145.

Not like he can move to FW in SF. And SF could also mean Starting to Fade as in Strikeforce is starting to fade.

Blanco was a small lightweight
He should excel at feathweight
Won't be suprised if he faces homminick or nunes first

Pat Healy agrees with the move:

I think going to featherweight was the right move for him. It was a smart play obviously, since he’s in the UFC now. I don’t think he cut much, if any, weight. He was a lot smaller than me for sure. I think it was a good decision for his career and should help him become more successful.

Bam vs. Wild Blog on Five Ounces of Pain

Pretty damn interesting read in general from Healy (who is going to China for 6 weeks).
