TUF season 1 winner and UFC welterweight Diego Sanchez recently spoke with MMAWeekly Radio and shared some history about himself. After Sanchez lost his attempt to win the lightweight title from B.J. Penn at UFC 107 near the end of 2009, he suffered from what he termed a “rockstar life.”

“After I lost the B.J. Penn fight, I lost control. I lost control of life. I had just made my biggest payday and I was just down about the loss. That was my dream to become world champion, and it still is. But it was at my fingertips and the way I lost, getting cut, so brutally cut, I was beat up.

“I took the wrong path. I took the path of partying, and I was just drinking away my sorrows. I was handling the problem the wrong way.”

“I let some bad influences get into my life and it was a downward spiral. It was like a tornado sucking everything in. I let a person that I thought was a friend, a real close friend, someone that would help me with finances, I had him helping me out with stuff. Turned out I got embezzled for over $170,000. He conned me. I got conned so bad. And in the same time when I got conned, I was just wasting the money that I had earned.”

I do not know the whole story but this is usually what happens...

Greedy and ignorant folks are more prone to being scammed. It takes two greedy heads to make a scam work.

well whoever scammed him is a dirtbag, but Diego obviously made some pretty stupid choices and allowed himself to be scammed. I don't care how good a friend you think the guy is, get someone who is licensed and does it for a living to manage your money, it's really just that simple.

You set yourself up to be ripped off if you trust people with those amounts of money. If I'm handing over 5 or 6 figures to someone I am going to be making sure that their name is signed to a legal document and that my ass is covered.

You could say it was a "nightmare" for him. Oh I had to do that, even if it was bad.

DTA, don't trust anyone these days.

Sometimes people are neither they are just too trusting. My mom once lost 300 bucks to Madam Cleo's psychic hotline, she is neither greedy or ignorant just gullible.

And I agree completely. Scams do not discriminate against the old, the young, the strong, the weak, the intelligent, the ignorant, the greedy, the kind-hearted etc.. but would you say they do attract the greedy and the ignorant more?

One more thing Macho.

I am sure your grandmother is a great person but somewhere in the development of that scam, your grandmother must have had greedy thoughts.

My parents are the same. They believe the crap these people tell them. They believe their wounds and sicknesses will go away if they buy this medallion for 400 dollars and wear it around their neck. It is a greedy mindset when one begins to think a stone or something can cure you of your medically incurable sicknesses.

Actually it was my mom and she was really upset over losing her dog and thought a phone psychic could help. So no I don't think there was any greed involved at all, just desperation and far too much belief in the goodness of others. But I do agree that get rich quick scams attract the greedy and ignorant, but I don't think this was the case with Diego or my mom.

I understand your thoughts here but... He is not looking for your sympathy He is just telling people what happened to him.
It sucks that he got ripped off. I can relate to the weed and alcohol thing.
He is a beliver in GOD and it does not sound like he is trying to garner sympathy from you bro. He is trying to get his life in order and maybe he can help others learn from his mistakes.
