Demian Maia's hopes at another title shot took a huge shot when he dropped unanimous decision to Mark Munoz at UFC 131, but he will be returning fairly soon. In fact, he's targeting UFC 136 on October 8th in Houston, TX.

Jorge Santiago up against Maia makes sense. Pretty quick turnaround for Maia since his last fight. But there aint no point waiting around like Rashad did waiting for Shogun haha. I reckon fighters should try and get as many fights as possible within the year cause it increases their notoriety, credibility and chances of moving up the ladder and getting a championship opportunity. Hope Demian gets a needed victory over whoever he faces come UFC 136.

Agreed. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. He's the Kenny Florian of the MW division.

Santiago would probably win that fight. Hard to tap & much better on the feet.

Damian was winning the standup in the first, but in the 2nd and 3rd he tried to get the takedown and pull guard, and lost as a result. Munoz was not willing to go to the ground. Maia has to really improve his wrestling if he wants to take down wrestlers in the UFC. he should go back to the judo, and try some flying armbars to pull guard. Maia at ww was a good plan, what happened to that.

I have a lot of respect for Maia. I remember when he first came to the UFC, and he was rolling out the wins. He did an interview where he said (paraphrasing) that he likes to use his BJJ to win fights, as proof that you don't have to hurt your opponents badly to win. I thought that was great, and I feel that the truth of that statement reflects the beauty of MMA.

Having said that, his striking looked vastly improved against Munoz, in my opinion. I'm glad he is expanding his game.

Disagree. He has the potential to be a champion and a dominant one.

He needs to get away from the striking. "Expanding his game" has hurt more than its helped. He's a jiu jitsu guy and thats what he needs to focus on. No reason to spend even a minute trying to strike.

i agree that he could be champ but expanding his game is the only way to do it. If all he is good at is jiu jitsu he will be easy to figure out. If His stand up caught up to his bjj he could be a very dominate champ
