A fight between onetime middleweight challenger Chael Sonnen (25-11-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) and former light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida (17-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) is not happening.

Sources close to the promotion today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the fight was briefly entertained but did not become a reality after being heavily rumored for the fall, possibly at UFC 136.

I can't see Machida facing Hamill. Machida is coming off a knockout win over Randy Couture and Hamill just got used as a punching bag for 15 minutes.

Good. I can't say I'm gonna miss it.

For all the talk about the fight on this forum, it does nothing for me.

First of all, it does nothing to clear up the LHW title picture.

Second, it takes away one of the few interesting contenders at MW.

Third, I'm pretty certain Sonnen would get murdered.

The match-up just makes no sense.

I disagree. I was really excited about that matchup and I think that Machida may have dodged a bullet, a bullet that would have laid ontop of him for 3 rounds.

Machida should fight Forrest next and give Sonnen Munoz

I honestly can't see a way Sonnen would win that fight. Machida is bigger, a much, much better striker, way better on the ground and his TDD is great and that's for a LHW. I really think Machida would knock Sonnen out, probably in the first.

First of all Forrest is rematching Shogun so that can't happen... I'd leave Sonnen in the MW division and have him fight Bisping or Leben, maybe even kick him over to Strikeforce they could use a few MW's. Have him redeem himself by winning the strikeforce title and then they'd have an excuse to put him in another title fight with Silva.

and... Machida vs. Tito 2!!!

Tito submitted Bader for one. Two, story wasn't a big underdog to either of those guys, Three, I didn't say there wasn't a way for him to win, I just can't see a way.

While it woudl be nice to see Strikeforce get more MW contenders considering they are extremely lacking in that department, so long as Jacare has that belt, Sonnen won't get to put his hands on it. Jacare, as hard as it is to say, is probably more of a threat to Sonnen than Silva is, imo. The only difference is that Silva poses a threat in multiple areas to Sonnen, where as Jacare poses a MASSIVE threat in the area Sonnen is most susceptible. If he thought Maia was crazy good on the ground, wait until he got a taste of Jacare's ground game.
