With a few words from arguably the most powerful man in New York state politics, it appears that mixed martial arts in the Empire State will once again die in its 2011 bid for sanctioning.

State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat and 34-year veteran of the Assembly who has held the most pivotal role in New York's legislature since 1994, effectively sealed the sport's fate with a single sentence.

"There does not appear to be widespread support in the Assembly for this legislation," Silver said on Tuesday, according to The New York Daily News.

To say the least, his words come as a curious statement just days after the bill to regulate the sport had easily sailed through the Assembly's Tourism, Parks, Arts and Sports Development committee by a 16-3 vote. The bill had already been passed through the state senate as well, in a 42-18 vote.

I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of Lay N Pray to Sheldon Silver for 25 minutes.

its strange how NY is so far behind the rest of the country on making MMA a sport. Usually NY is progressive.

Even President Obama has said he knows of MMA,(i dont know if he likes it) and spoke of results from a UFC event.

I hadn't thought of that...that makes a lot of sense. There may or may not be a "boxing lobby" but I'll bet certain influential folks within the boxing world are working hard to influence NY politicians.

This decision is based around the in ability to control revenue and unwillingness to deal with union workers that are part of the Zuffa corporation. Sheldon Silver has seen the numbers and knows its popularity and potential but since Sheldon's in ability to use his law firm or seat of power as a way to manipulate MMA he will not take chances on missing out on any possible law suites or chances for quick money.

is summation Sheldon Silver is a D-BAG

Really true imigane Overeem v Velasquez at the garden or Rampage v Jones why are they delaying this sanctioning so much I reckon there is a hidden agenda to these wankers.

This whole issue boils down to Zuffa vs Unionized Workers.

UNITE HERE - Info is a New York based powerful union group that has been fighting to get Nevada's Culinary Union Local 226 into the Fertitta Bros. Station Casino's.

Because the Fertitta Bros. won't allow them into their casino's the Union is using it's dues to pressure state assembly members to vote against sanctioning MMA in the state.

As long as the Unions can't get into Station Casino's don't hold your breath for a show at Madison Square Garden, they apparently have a lot of power in NY politics.
