Richard Deitsch of SI.com broke some news earlier today that many MMA fans will undoubtedly be pleased to hear. Veteran announcer Gus Johnson, who has covered Strikeforce events on Showtime and CBS as well as EliteXC events in the past, will no longer be working with CBS Sports after 16 years of employment:

NICE! One of the top 3 worst commentators in mma is gone.

Agreed. I couldn't stand his post fight interviews.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in the playground is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no props, and may the mods have mercy on your soul.

Strictly as an mma fan I am very happy to hear this. There are so many people around the world who would love to do his job, who actually love mma ! It's not fair he got to cover a sport so many fans love and he clearly didn't give 2 sh*ts about.

Its Renzo. You guys are aware he did way more then just MMA for CBS right? Its a pretty big loss for them to be honest.

[Update - Mike Fagan] The New York Daily News reports that Gus has not yet left CBS, though his contract with the company expired after the Final Four.

I like Gus. But he is much better at NFL than MMA.

1. I am aware he trained but that's to me doesn't mean much they do that to most mma announcers for
big promotions so they can better call the action, mike goldberg had to do the same thing. Still doesn't change
what I stated in my post that he didn't love the sport.

2. I am aware that he covered other sports that's why I clearly stated strictly as an mma fan meaning im commenting on him leaving from the stance of someone who watches him as an mma announcer.

Hallelujah. This is like the biggest news in the world right now.

Can't stand him on SF, can't stand him when he announces my Chiefs games.

Anyone who says on national tv "this is mma, and this stuff does happen" in regards to post-fight brawls deserves to be axed immediately. And kicked in the nuts.

I think this sums up his knowledge of MMA:

"The most incredible victory in the history of mixed martial arts" - Gus Johnson in response to Seth Petruzelli knocking out Kimbo.
