A welterweight bout between Diego Sanchez (23-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) and Matt Hughes (45-8 MMA, 18-6 UFC) has been tapped for a to-be-announced UFC event in the fall, officials today announced.

No date or location were announced for the fight.

The booking, though, all but assures that UFC Hall of Famer Royce Gracie won't get his desired rematch with Hughes at August's UFC 134 event in Brazil.

awesome fight for both fighters
this fight is just as good now as it would have been a few years ago. Hughes is on a tear, minus the bj ko,
both are smarter fighters, what Hughes gives up in age, he makes up for with new skills and exp. and Diego has won close fights with 2 good opponents, the winner should move closer to contendership.

I wanted to see this fight after Sanchez beat Parisyan but it's still exciting now. I'm having a very hard time picking a winner.

I have a feeling this is his last fight. It's a fight over a high ranked opponent that is very winnable. It's 50/50 in my mind. It all depends on how well Sanchez can deal with Hughes taking him down. Something tells me this fight will look a lot like Hughes vs. Serra.

I'm surprised Hughes agreed on this. Sanchez doesn't seem like the type of guy he would want to fight. He shouldn't have much trouble, though. Sanchez has always struggled against stronger wrestlers at Welterweight.

Sanchez wins 29-28 UD.

kinda surprised about this as Diego is on a win streak while Hughes just got KTFO in 30 seconds. id much rather see Sanchez vs DHK and Hughes vs Hendricks

good fight. like both fighters. cant really understand how they came up with it. diego needs to fight a current welterweight and Hughes really doesn't need this fight with diego. rather see him fight hendricks too

If this is for the AUgust Versus card in Milwaukee in August, I might be forced to go.

This is a perfect fight for Hughes. He isn't gonna get KO'd by Diego, and He should be able to Outmuscle Diego.

Hughes by decision

Hughes is a former champion, and he was knocked out by B.J Penn, who isn't exactly a low ranked fighter. While Sanchez just won a decision over Martin Kampmann. The matchup makes sense if you think about it.

I don't know what to think of Hughes at this point in his career. If Matt was a guy that had big power in his hands it would be easier to favor him near the end of the line, but he never has been that guy. I could see him outwrestling Diego, but I think the odds are that Diego outworks him and has a field day on the feet. I'd like to see Hughes go out with a win, but if he wins it probably makes him consider hanging around longer and trying to make one last run, and I just don't see him being able to beat most 170 pounders near title contention. Diego might be the exception because he's not a big power puncher.

I hardly call what Diego has done a win streak especially the last fight...I would rather be Matt Hughes in his last fight than Diego anyday...
