With UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones (13-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) injured, UFC officials now are targeting a bout between the champ's original opponent, Rashad Evans (15-1-1 MMA, 10-1-1 UFC), and replacement Phil Davis (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC).

Sources today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the new matchup, which is expected to take place at UFC 133. The Canadian Press' Neil Davidson first reported the opponent switch.

A source told MMAjunkie.com that Jones is facing a lengthy recovery from a torn right-hand ligament suffered in his title win. A timetable for his return wasn't immediately available.

I am probably as frustrated as Rashad Evans right now! Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back.

May 2010 - Shogun Rua KO's Machida for UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Suffers a knee injury. First title defense over ten months later on March 19th, 2011.

September 2010 - Jose Aldo beats Manny Gamburyan, becoming the last WEC Featherweight Champion. Is given the UFC Featherweight Championship. Out of action for seven months until first title defense on April 30th, 2011.

October 2010 - Cain Velasquez beats Brock Lesnar for the UFC HW title. Six months later Cain doesn't even have a date to defend his title.

December 2010 - Dominick Cruz beats Scott Jorgensen to become the last WEC and first UFC Bantamweight Champion. First defense not until July 2nd, 2011.

And now this...... You know what I'd love to see? Someone win the a and defend it in like 2-3 months. I'd also love to see a title defended or fought for more than twice a year.

Anderson Silva destroyed Vitor Belfort on February 5th, 2011. He didn't take one punch, from what I recall. He fights Yushin Okami on August 27th, 2011. You really need six months to recover from a fight where you didn't even get hit? I mean, I know that scramble will take at least three months to catch your breath from....

Addendum - Does anyone think this is a good move for Davis? I could've sworn he was looking to take most of the year off and work on his skill set. Now he's fighting the No. 1 contender, former LHW champion? I would bet 'Shad handles Davis soundly. I was really hoping they would bring Davis along a little more gradually. Granted after beating Little Nog, this is the level of competition you find yourself in...

and this is why ufc cant wait to fold SF...injuries hurt cards..pay perviews salesand really the same amount of money is spent on production...I still think a fighter on stand by like I have said before is a great idea too..>cause as a fan I hate beinghyped for a fight then something go wrong..>This way at least I can already have an idea of whos stepping in...

Whats bad for rashad too is I bet by the time Jones gets better it will be someone else that fights him because of schedule conflicts...

I thought I read somewhere Davis was taking some time off? So I'm guessing the winner gets a title shot then? Interesting fight, kind of sucks for Rashad but oh well. Good for Davis stepping up. I actually think he has a great shot at beating Rashad after his long lay off.

I highly doubt it.

Not so sure about that after the trouble he had with Lil Nog...I think Rashad would possibly beat Lil Nog worse than Davis...

UFC is in need of more elite fighters for sure...ANd to be more careful in matchmaking....I woudl have never put Bader against Jon Jones they both were up and coming.....

Davis took the fight with Nog on short notice. He never was in trouble during the whole fight, and adapted whenever his double wasn't working. Davis's wrestling is far better than Rashad's. Rashad has a tendency to get rocked , and Davis hasn't had his chin tested yet. Rashad's layoff should factor in, and I look for Davis to win a decision. Even after a victory over Rashad if I was Phil I would look for a few more fights before Jones.
