Not even winning "Fight of the Night" is enough to save UFC lightweights from the massive cuts still coming down after the merger with the WEC. Gareth Davies brings word that British striker Paul Kelly (11-4) has been released from the promotion after his second round submission loss to Donald Cerrone (14-3) at UFC 126: "Silva vs. Belfort" on Feb. 5. The "sucker punch" reportedly had nothing to do with the decision to let "Tellys" go.

Unfortunate but understandable. The UFC has an obligation to the fans to only contract the very best. That is afterall what they claim.

I don't know what is more unfortunate, him getting cut, or what can only be called his sucker punch of Donald Cerrone. Kelly always came to bang, which was why I enjoyed him, and why I am sure the UFC brought him back in spite of a losing record. (That and his potential to appeal to the demographic in the UK)

I might be wrong but I thought that after the fight during the interview with Rogan Kelly said that the 'sucker punch' was down to a misunderstanding and Cerrone agreed? If that's the case then I'm not sure why it is still being referred to.

Paul really isnt was of my favs but I mean he did have a win before the Cerrone fight so its not like it was two straight losses. And he did have 5 UFC wins. Then you have some 55ers going down to 45.

Too bad. His ground game was nothing to write home about, but I would have liked to see him stick around and just pit him against other stand up fighters. Maybe his $19000 salary had something to do with it.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in the playground is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no props, and may the mods have mercy on your soul.

I don't think a 9-4 record calls for release, but hey, who am I to say so? It's just unfortunate because I enjoyed him. I'll never forget his fight with Paul Taylor. Hopefully he can catch a contract with one of the other decent promotions, and not have to settle with going back to the local U.K circut.

That sucker punch didn't help his cause
I thought fight of the night would help him secure another bout
He will be back.

I dont buy the claim that it had nothing to do with the suckerpunch, karma imo.

Not really surprising. He could be back with a couple of wins.
