Strikeforce has parted ways with Joey Villasenor and Joe Riggs.

Five Ounces of Pain first reported the pair's release from the promotion on Wednesday night, and Sherdog confirmed the report with Strikeforce officials early Thursday morning.

Villasenor has recently suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, dropping bouts to Danillo Villefort and Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. Prior to those defeats, the 35-year-old was riding a four-fight winning streak, earning victories over notables Phil Baroni and Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos in that span.

A Pride Fighting Championships veteran, “Smokin' Joe” contended for the defunct EliteXC middleweight championship in 2007, losing by TKO to Murilo "Ninja" Rua at Strikeforce “Shamrock vs. Baroni.”

An eight-time UFC veteran, Riggs began his career in 2001, fighting as a heavyweight. “Diesel” made the cut to 205 pounds in 2004 and then to middleweight later that year. The 28-year-old now cycles between stints at middleweight and welterweight and has won six of his last seven fights.

Kinda strange cuts TBH. Riggs won his last fight. Villasenor lost his last 2, but could've in reality been cut 3 months ago, so that he could get another fight scheduled. Makes me wonder if they just wanted to free up some cash or perhaps didn't feel their value lived up to what they were getting paid. Seems like there are some other factors though for sure.

I guess they didn't want Riggs beating Diaz again?

WTF?? These are two guys will good skill sets, good name recognition, and fight their balls off every fight win or lose! As a fan I am dissapointed. As a pure buisness move I dont get it?? Unless they were getting paid ridiculous money......which I can't see being the case. Like twentydollars said. They really need to focus on guys like Walker, and Batista. And maybe sink a shite ton of money into an M-1 "challengers" Promotion!!!! Just to apease one fighter! Make way YAMMA and EliteXC here comes Strike Force!!!!!

SF probably didn't like Joey's recent domestic problems with his tv anchorwoman gf.If she could beat him up he probably isn't that good anyway.Maybe they can now sign his girlfriend.
And Riggs last performance was less than impressive not to mention that he's a jackwagon.

The guys haven't evolved in years and despite being exciting (which should be enough for SF!) aren't going to be big any time soon....Walker and Batista are freak fights that make big money......it's business in a young sport.
