With UFC 122 in the books, the focus now turns to Saturday's UFC 123 headliner between former champions Lyoto Machida and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

And though the light-heavyweight bout may seem a likely No. 1 contender's bout, UFC president Dana White told MMAjunkie.com he's not ready to promise a title shot to the winner just yet.

"I don't know," he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "The fight has to happen first (before I decide)."

Saturday's pay-per-view show takes place at the Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit and is bolstered by a B.J. Penn vs. Matt Hughes co-headliner. But the bout that could have the biggest and most immediate impact on its division is Machida (16-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) vs. Jackson (30-8 MMA, 5-2 UFC).

Thoughts?

I personally don't really agree if either guy got the title shot after winning this fight. Even though I do want to see Rampage/Shogun in the UFC.

Im thinking possibly winner of ramapage/machida faces winner of franklin/griffin or jones/bader then winner of all that fights for the title.

I'm willing to bet that this comment right here;

"I don't know," he told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "The fight has to happen first (before I decide)."

has EVERYTHING to do with the Marquardt and Okami fight.

I think both Rampage & Machida both need to win this fight and another fight to be considered title contenders

Well, Shogun vs. Rashad won't be until March, if everything goes well, so the next title fight after that wouldn't be until July or August. The winners of Forrest Griffin vs. Rich Franklin and Jon Jones vs. Ryan Bader could be in the running too.

The winner of Machida - Rampage should not get the next title shot.

Dana says the LHW division is "so stacked". I don't think the UFC LHW division is really that stacked at all. I think it is actually rather thin, flimsy and shallow! There are a few key guys and the rest are mid rungers. How many of them have a realistic shot at winning the title? A couple. Personally I feel the only weaker division is the HW division. The MW, WW and LW divisions are far more "stacked". Hell, even the FW and BW coming from the WEC are more "stacked". I like Dana, I think he is awesome...but sometimes he sure is crazy.

There's a few factors to consider about the next challenger for the title:

1) How will Jon Jones and Ryan Bader look in their upcoming showdown? If Jones or Bader impress, is it time to market the winner as a potential champion?
2) Would the winner of Jackson vs. Machida set-up a rematch that people do not want to see with the winner of Evans vs. Rua? Does anybody want to see Jackson vs. Evans II or Rua vs. Machida III?
3) How long will the turnaround time be for the winner of Rua vs. Evans? Six months? A year? Does the UFC want to put a star on the shelf in the same way they have shelved Evans?

Dana White is right in being noncommittal on this.

If Evans and Machida win's thats the only way i can see the winner of this fight getting a title shot.

I would not be suprised if Machida got a shot if he beats Rampage even though I think it's too soon to do Shogun/Machida 3 but if rashad win the title then he will have to defend his title again against machida, that would suck.

IMO Winner of griffin/franklin should be given winner of jones/bader, giving the winner of that a fight with whoever wins machida/rampage, setting them up for the title shot.
Gives Jonny the venture into the top 5 he needs, and that the fans really want.
Anything that leads to Jon Jones fighting Machida is ok in my books

I agree, Rampage-Shogun II is a must-see, provided they're both in good form. I wouldn't want to see Rashad-Rampage II, Rashad-Machida II, or Shogun-Machida III. At least, not yet.

He said he wants to see it...?
This division is a real mess right now thanks to injuries and TUF lay offs. I'm cool with any of the fights happening between Machida, Rua, Evans, Jackson, Griffin, Franklin, Jones and Bader. Any combination of those is cool by me.
