http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2010/10/28/1779797/dana-white-to-announce-ufc-merger-with-the-wec

World Extreme Cagefighting is merging with its sister organization the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In the video interview below, Dana White exclusively confirmed that the merger will take place in January 2011. In addition, White said that four UFC events will air live on Versus in 2011.

The final two WEC cards will air on the cable network on Nov. 11 and Dec. 16, which means that starting next year, the UFC will absorb WEC's 135, 145 and 155 weight classes.

This surely means there will never be another weak card from the UFC

Absolutely fantastic news! I get kind of giddy picturing Aldo and friends under the UFC banner.

I really don't think it will. Dana says in the Helwani interview that the four fight cards on Versus is max they can do outside their Spike contract at the moment. So I'm thinking as soon as that's up, it'll be a whole new ball game. Especially once the UFC Network gets up and running.

Although I'd say I'm probably a bit more skeptical than most. I love me some WEC

Long time coming! Great news. Better PPV, better fight nights. I agree though, I hope this doesn't mean less free fights.

155lbers need at least one tune up fight. Sucks for them, but it is reality.

Just finished listening to interview. Sounds like they plan on 4 on Spike, up to four more on VS, plus close to what they already do.

The latter is not official.

The WEC's lightweight championship will also be on the line at WEC 53 as current champ Ben Henderson takes on Anthony Pettis. It's currently unclear what will become of the WEC's lightweight title, but UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta hinted of a champion vs. champion superfight at the UFC Fan Expo London 2010.

"We'd love to see kind of a 'champion vs. champion' type bout with Ben and Frankie Edgar or something like that," Fertitta said. "Ben Henderson is a great fighter, and I think he could do really, really well against some of the top guys in the UFC at 155 (pounds)."

it sounds to me like theres going to be less free mma on tv during 2011 for sure, but i have no idea when their contract is up with spike so it could be a couple years with a handful less zuffa cards. im all for the move, it was just the one thing that concerned me upon first reading about this before i saw the interview.

MikeChiappetta :
Dana said the winner of Ben Henderson-Anthony Pettis fight will face Maynard-Edgar winner for UFC LW title.

For you Cowcatcher
MikeChiappetta :
Dana: We’re maxed out on pay-per-view. If anything, if we add more events, it’s more free fights.

Ben Fowlkes :
Dana says "definitely" TUF could feature the smaller guys soon.

Ariel Helwani
Dana: All WEC employees staying with the UFC.

Mike Chiappetta :
Dana says cage size will stay the same as UFC cage (WEC cage was smaller)
