Chael Sonnen is "unlikely" to get a rematch with Anderson Silva targeted for next year's Super Bowl weekend if he does not quickly answer to a notice informing him of a positive test for a banned performance-enhancer. California State Athletic Commission Executive Director George Dodd today said that Sonnen is currently under suspension and has 30 days to respond to the notice, which came nearly six weeks after his title fight with Silva at UFC 117. Dodd said he plans to release the drug for which Sonnen tested positive this afternoon.

Update: It was testosterone. Levels "well above normal".

And if he doesn't appeal, he's looking at a 1 year suspension (until 9/2/11) and a $2500 fine.

Appealing is good, if you have at least a shred of evidence to help your case. Unfortunately the burden of proof is now on the fighter as the commission already has a pretty rock solid piece of scientific evidence proving their side of the story. This is why Sean Sherk's plea of innocence was left largely unheard by the community who follows the sport, that and the fact that most unfit people can't believe that the human body can look like Sherk's without cheating .

I wouldn't be shocked to see another 205-lb 'exhibition' match for the champ while he waits for Belfort and Okami to settle their hash. Chuck Liddell? Cyrille Diabate? Jason Brilz? Vladimir Matyushenko?

I love the sound of a fight with Diabate. That would be fun to watch.

probably because he's said numerous times that he doesn't think the majority of athletes use PED's, and he might be trying to keep this from affecting the sport as a whole.
