After falling short in an attempt to reclaim his lightweight title this past month at UFC 118, B.J. Penn spent his time on the flight home from Boston pondering his career. But by the time he landed in Hawaii he decided to keep fighting. And although he'll next meet Matt Hughes at UFC 123, it appears UFC's original plan for him was Kenny Florian. According to Penn, that was the original plan except Florian was hurt and couldn't go. So Dana White then suggested Hughes. Penn agreed and it was on.

Yeah I'd rather see Hughes Penn than a second florian fight.

If hughes win and I hope he does, Penn will retire I bet.

Penn is going to be fighting when he's 40. He might take a long break but he'll be back. I almost feel ashamed to root for Hughes, but I like Hughes ever since he got beat by Alves.

Penn needs discipline and a better trainer.
He needs to branch out. Train with ATT or aka a few weeks

Have people forgotten that sometimes styles and matchups win fights? I guess he doesn't train hard now that he lost twice to the same person, but he trained hard enough when he destroyed Sanchez, Florian, Sherk and Stevenson.

He trained With Marinovich for those fights but Didn't for this last edgar fight. Also his corner its self needs to be changed. Yes men have thier place but in the corner when your losing badly for the first time in a long time is not the place. He needed someone to tell him to go back to the jab go for a take down not your the best your going to win!!! Yeah BJ!!!!!

I don't know what to make of BJ vs Edgar 1 and 2 for BJ's career. Bj did look slower after the first round in 2nd fight, and after the 2nd rd in 1st fight. I think he looked past Edgar's standup and speed. The same way people think wrestlers arent dangerous when they lay n prey, and people look past wrestlers like Lentz. Bj thought he would crush Edgar in a rematch, and didnt give Edgar the respect he deserved especially after losing 2 Edgar. Also, Edgar may or may not be better grappling than BJ, but BJ had the back of edgar and had a few takedowns to prove edgar can be sub'd easy, every time Edgar survived, reversed the position or stood up.

I don't think Penn should retire. Penn vs Hughes 3 will be a fight im excited for, but Bj should take some warmup fights before taking on a heavier ex champ on the rise again.

ps, i dont think BJ is done, edgar is just a bad matchup for Bj, and Edgar is really well rounded and fast.

I personall ythink that everyone in the industry that knows him to a much larger degree than myself (who knows him only through the internet and tv) say that he is lazy probably for a reason......he was born into a well to do family and has trained from home his whole life....I don't think he should shake things up and train somewhere like AKA or ATT for a few weeks, I think he should do it for about 6 months to include a Camp for a fight. Things he would never even consider I bet.

This is awesome I've been wanting to see this rubber match for quite a while now. Hughes has looked pretty good in his last couple of fights, and has the size/strength advantage, and BJ didn't look overly good against Edgar either time. Plus Hughes has greatly worked on his striking it looks like so I think he's going to take this fight.
