You can call it the end of an era. Granted, that era lasted all of 3 minutes and 19 seconds, but it's still over. After James Toney was forced to tap out (or wave out, if you choose to be technical) in the first round of his UFC 118 contest with Randy Couture on Saturday night at Boston's TD Garden, White said he's done with boxers making their way to the organization – no matter who it is. "I thought we answered this question in 1993, but James came out and he picked a fight," White said. "We answered the question again in 2010. I don't think it needs to be answered again. I don't care if it's (Floyd) Mayweather or anybody else." It was in 1993 that a boxer appeared in the very first UFC event. Art Jimmerson's infamous one-gloved approach to the fight is an iconic image in the history of the sport.

I understand Dana's posistion b but I would still love to see a few more boxers attempt to make the transistion. But it has to be something they take seriously and they have to learn to grapple.
We saw guys like CC and Hunt make the transistion from K1 into MMA and saw that they could find victory. Granted traditional boxing is still a different animal from even its kicking counterpart I would still love to see a few more great boxers make the transition.

I saw this coming a mile away. Big name boxers can't make it in MMA for one reason: MONEY!
Sure James Toney is a stellar boxer but this is MMA you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. Sure Lesnar started at the top and succeeded but that was due to his real wrestling experience and his insane size and athleticism. James Toney should have been matched up against a more "suitable" opponent. James Toney made a ridiculous and unjustified amount of money in this fight. You can't get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars fighting in a flimsy cage in some tiny joint in Ohio against Tom Atocan. For the money Toney was looking for he had to start out right at the top against the "top of the food chain".
Personally I think Dana wanted to embarrass the Boxing Industry and was willing to pay a good chunk of change to do it. I have been a life long fan of Boxing and Martial Arts. I have been a fan of the UFC and MMA since day one. I don't understand all the crap about Boxing/MMA and who is better. They are Apples and Oranges. Or better yet MMA is a "Banana Split" and Boxing is "Vanilla Ice Cream". Boxing is just one element of MMA.
Besides, Boxers are already in MMA and can make it. Ahem! KJ Noons 11-2 in Boxing and 10-2 in MMA. He actually has more pro boxing matches than MMA ones!
Chris Lytle 13-1-1 boxing and 29-17-5 in MMA, Marcus Davis 17-1-2 in boxing and 17-7 in MMA and Alessio Sakara 6-1 boxing and 15-7 MMA.
Big name boxers will never make it in MMA because they haven't the ground fighting experience and the amount of money they "require" to fight does not allow them to fight more suitable opponents. Dana White knew what he was doing. I am surprised the Athletic Commission would allow this fight to take place though. This fight was a "double mismatch". On their feet it is a deadly mismatch and on the ground it is a joke. The whole thing was a joke from the start. Not much was proved other than a bunch of people wanting to make money for all the wrong reasons.

Kermit Cintron is about the only big name boxer that I think could come in and do some serious damage, and Ricky Hatton has mentioned he'd like to give it a shot and trains MMA seriously. Toney was just a bad investment, in the fact he was old and had a style that only really works in boxing.

if a serious boxer wants to take on MMA it cant be like what toney did were he talks all this sh!t about MMA saying boxing is better. the boxer needs to give up boxing as his sport and take up MMA full time. there are some serious athletes in professional boxing, alot of those guys with a good camp could be very good MMA fighters and that in turn would be good for our sport.

I have a hard time believing that if a modern elite boxer like Mayweather or Paquaio, or even Hatton, chased Dana around as much as Toney did looking for a fight that White would say no.

those guys know better though, i don't think they'd be interested at all in trying out mma. Maybe training with big names and such to see what its all about but actually stepping in the octagon for an actual fight... i think not

I'd still like to see Toney get smashed by a kickboxer.
