Yes, Dana White actually is pulling a Lyoto Machida of sorts again with regards to perhaps his Middleweight counterpart. He made this comment recently on the Versus sports talk show The Daily Line: "I think it's time this guy gets a title shot; he's been here a long time." Okami is 8-2 in UFC with the only losses coming to Rich Franklin & Chael Sonnen. He next faces Mark Munoz Sunday at UFC On Versus 2, but the fight hasn't been confirmed as being a #1 contender's fight.

What odd timing.
Let the guy put together at least a couple wins in a row first.
When he was 4-0 right before the Franklin fight would have been a good time, or on a three fight streak before the Sonnen loss.
8-2 is damned impressive, but he needs some steam built up recently.

i think that the reason this is looking like a #1 contender match is because there isnt really anyone left for anderson to fight.
i guess ill be the guy who says it, but silva is facing chael friggin sonnen for the belt. sonnens a solid fighter, but hes never been a guy most, including myself, saw as a title holder or even contender. when he realized he was getting close to a title shot in a thinned out division he decided it would be smart to make himself relevant and started smack talking like crazy. it was a great move and gave a ho hum fight at least a little hype.
now dont get me wrong, sonnen has a shot to beat silva, and a good style to beat him(or at least thats what we seem to think as mma fans as a whole), but go back two years or so and there wasnt anyone clamoring for sonnen to get his shot, or people saying hes their favorite fighter. this is an intriguing matchup mostly because of what sonnens said, not what hes done. lets not forget that hes a fill in for vitor as a result of the things he said about silva in the first place.
there just arent a ton of great fights for anderson at MW anymore and okami is the last guy to beat him, so i can see where dana is coming from, and personally think its a long time coming. only problem is that munoz is an up and comer and seems to be improving so he might rain on this parade.

He won't get past Munoz any way. But this is strange. Okami needs to get at least a couple fight win streak first.

I think it's long overdue for Okami to get a shot at Anderson Silva.

Okami should have had his shot a long time ago. It's a shame he was overlooked. I know the reasoning (because he was getting decisions or not the most exciting to watch) but Gray Maynard is getting a number 1 contender match after 6 decision W's, one of which was probably the wrong decision (Diaz) I don't think he would fare well against the winner of Silva/Sonnen either way but its the right thing to do on Dana's part.

I think it's because everyone in the division is off course as well for a title shot, but at least with Okami they have a story to tell, that being that he did beat Silva a ways back. I think he would have lost the fight to Silva if it hadn't gone down the way it did, Okami wasn't that hurt and he was in good position. Plus they are sure to have lots of video to put into Yushin's portion of the pre-fight hype video. He sure does need a couple of good wins in a row though......Do you all think Munoz gets a shot if he wins? He is 3-0 since moving to MW with wins oover Catone, Jensen and Grove, add Yushin to that and I think he has a case.

Why now? Because he's actually finished a few fights? I love Okami, but a win over a still pretty green Mark Munoz shouldn't lift him to a title shot.

After Belfort I would love to see Okami get the shot he's one of the few I could see taking it to Anderson Silva. If anyone's gonna beat him it will be Belfort or Okami, at least in the middleweight division.
