The UFC has a new contender in the welterweight division and his name is Jake Shields.

The former Strikeforce middleweight champion has officially signed with the UFC, and will move back down to 170lbs, where he spent the majority of his career before a recent move to 185lbs.

The news was announced by GracieFighter.com, the site for Shields' lead trainer Cesar Gracie, on late Thursday night.

I really like the move though I'm pulling for the winner of Fitch vs Alves to face him rather than Kampman.

And with Dan Hardy not confirming his fight yet with conduit I'm suggesting that he's fighting Shields at 120. I think that the UFC have been hedging their bets over whether Sheilds was coming in or not.

I doubt it. Hardy's coming off a loss to Georges St. Pierre, and Jake Shields comes into the UFC probably one fight from a title shot.

Current rumors for a first fight for Shields includes a possible match-up with Martin Kampmann as early as UFC 121 in October. Following a win over Paulo Thiago in June, Kampmann welcomed the chance to face Shields for his first UFC fight.

Kampmann is my initial guess since it's a winnable fight for him, but the winner of Alves vs. Fitch would be a good matchup for him too although there's a strong possibility either Fitch or Alves put this signing into the same light that Shields put Henderson's move to Strikeforce.

Well, yeah, so a former number 1 contender (Hardy) wouldn't be a bad first fight before allowing GSP to destroy him.

The UFC can use a potential win over a top pound-for-pound fighter like Jake Shields as a way to promote a fighter for a title match though, but even if Hardy defeated Shields, it would still be difficult to make him seem like he had a shot against GSP in a second fight.

I got you. We were on opposite sides of the same coin. Not that I want Shields to fight for the title, I think Dana does, though. Hardy should be a win for Jake. Though I see your point, if Hardy does win that fight, it would be hard not to give him another shot at GSP.

I'm surprised Sheilds was unable to negotiate an immediate title shot.

I see where Shields is coming from, but he may want to slow down with already asking for a different fight. I know he thinks he wants Alvez or Fitch...but I feel like both of those fights are terrible for him. The Alvez fight is definitely a better fight for shields. He could win that fight the same way GSP did, but the Fitch fight is extremely dangerous for him. He doens't want to drop one in his first UFC match-up. That being said I think Kampmann can beat shields. The Paulo Thiago fight was extremely impressive as was the sub of Volmann. It'll be interesting to me to see how Shields stacks up.

I'm a huge fan of Shields. I can't wait to see him fight GSP. I'm assuming that because they're both so good on the ground GSP would have different gameplan for this fight. So far the safest road to victory has been the takedown. Against shields he'd be better off standing up. So it would be a great fight to watch and one that I think is winnable for either fighter.
