Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida (16-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) has fully recovered from a knockout loss to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in May, and "The Dragon" is primed for a return to action.

And if you think Machida is looking for some kind of warm-up fight to get the taste of his first professional loss out of his mouth, think again.

Instead, with Rua sidelined until the spring, Machida and his camp would like a shot at an interim title against Rashad Evans with the winner eventually taking on "Shogun."

hes wanting anotherpiece of shogun already? imo hes 0-2 and someone else needs to get a shot before he gets another one. im sure hell get another shot sooner or later and im sure shogun will still be holding the belt.maybe if jon jones wins machida vs jones would be awesome.

How about you and Rampage get it on in the next few months and if there is time the winner gets a shot a Rashad. Is Rua able to fight in March or can't train till March?

I don't think Machida has a problem fighting Rampage....he's not the one saying it would be a "boring fight."

B.J. lost and got a rematch, Shogun lost and got a rematch, Faber lost and got a rematch, Couture lost and got a shot at a different or same title 3 times, Arlovski lost and got a rematch....regardless of your take on the first fight, the record is 1-1 against each other. Who else would you have fight for an interim title?

Very well stated...really there isn't a clear cut interim title match other than this one...everyone else is either a fight away or Rampage who just lost to Rashad...being that Rashad lost his belt to Machida I think it makes pretty good sense to set up that rematch...if Machida wins then he wont ever need to fight Rashad again and he sets up the final frame to his trilogy with shogun...meanwhile the rest of the division has time to emerge the next clear contender...bottomline:shoguns out and its either shelve Rashad or put this fight together. I would prefer the fight myself.

no one. march isnt a horrible long time away. i think if its a year or more that they should have an interim title shot. but 9 months or so is waitable.on the border but waitable. what they should do is have a small tourny to figure out a contender. lil nog, rashad, machida and (if he wins) jones.

problem is Rashad was already guarenteed a title shot...thats why he's saying that without it being an interim match...he ain't fighting. but otherwise the tourney is a great idea...I"m always a fan of a tourney

I don't really see where its that big of a deal..its basically a glorified number one contender while the champ is sidelined...it doesn't really take away from anything and it keep things interesting.

Saved me the trouble. I can't give props right now, though.

Their record against each other is 1-1. Anyone who says they think differently and that somehow their opinion should apply to the fighter's records is dead wrong . You may not like it, I may not like it, but it's the way it is. Lyoto and Shogun are 1-1 vs. each other. That's how it is and how it will remain until they fight again.

I don't wanna see thi, Rashad hasn't shown me anything to believe he is deserving of a title shot he almost got knocked out in his last 2 fights and won in very boring fashion. I would rather see Bader or Jones in a interim fight over Rashad

i look at interim belts this way. you have a year to defend. even if you know right after a fight you'll be out for longer, it's yours for a year. make the interim belt a year from now. let the contenders sort it out till then. let lyoto fight rashad, let rampage fight thiago or some one else. but i think you have to be out a year before another belt is introduced.
