And in comments about the broken ribs that ultimately forced him out of his UFC 116 fight with Yoshihiro Akiyama, he also revealed a knee injury he was working through and how disappointed he is about having to withdraw from the fight. "I went through a very tense and difficult weekend and had a very hard decision. Two weeks ago I felt pain in my knee while I was training wrestling. I had an MRI of my knee and three doctors told me my knee was torn. I took medicine to help with the pain, and although my knee felt loose, I said 'no,' this date is very important to me and I continued training. Last Friday, during sparring, I injured my rib. It was very painful and the next day I had an x-ray and an MRI. I discovered I had three broken ribs. After years of fighting, my body made me stop this time. This is a very, very, very hard moment for me. This was a fight I really, really desired. You cannot imagine how much I wanted to fight on this card. It was my birthday, I had friends and family from Brazil and around the world coming to see me and now I cannot fight. I apologize to my opponent. I hope that I can fight with you in the future. You are an amazing fighter."

And you, Wand, are the man. This guy is a f*****g fighter. He still loves it and knows how much the fans wanted to see this, hopefully he'll be back soon and they'll make Silva-Akiyama again when he returns.

is there anyone that doesnt like this guy? hes classy, he genuinely seems to care about the fans, he doesnt have boring fights, and he seems heartbroken to not be fighting. i could see someone not liking him as a fighter, we all have our personal tastes(no matter how wrong they sometimes are), but as a person this guy is top notch. i hope he heals quickly and gets back in there healthy and ready to fight.

This is my favorite part of Wanderlei's quote. He's apologizing to his opponent for getting hurt. I LOVE WAND!

Agreed. I didn't get to watch PRIDE when it was around but as soon as I got to "know" Wandy when he came to the UFC, I was immediately hooked. Great guy. Great fighter. Great ambassador for the sport we love.

He loves the fans and he loves fighting. that's why so many of us love him. ya I'm disappointed he won't be fighting, but I'm glad he pulled out I dont want him to not be himself. If you love us wandy just wait until your healthy again to return.

Wandy is a class act. I don't care how many fights the man loses in the octagon, I will always tune in to watch him fight. He, like Jardine, just goes out there and gives it his all. He either goes down swinging, loses a decision in which he's bloodied, or delivers a highlight reel knockout.

I'm glad he hurt his ribs just because it prevents him from fighting with a bad knee. I'm a proud Wand nuthugger since 2002 and I only want to see him fight at 100%.

He posted a new video blog yesterday which I'm watching right now (he posted it after Leben was announced as the replacement), he gives an update on his injuries and says he'll have to have knee surgery now in addition to the broken ribs. He says he's probably looking at 6-7 months depending on how the recovery goes.

MMA is so brutal it seems like training can take as much out of you as the fights themselves. Think about how often MMA fighters get injured in training. It's getting ridiculous. That's why I have so much respect for these guys. I could never do what they do.

Man, that sucks. Well, at least he's taking care of the knee. I would have to say that's the silver lining in all of this is that he will be able to take care of a pre-existing condition and, hopefully, come back 100%
