James McSweeney's representative contends that his fighter was hit with several illegal elbows during a loss to Travis Browne this past Saturday at The Ultimate Fighter 11 finale. Lex McMahon, McSweeney's manager, today said that he intends to file an appeal this week with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. However, NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer said he does not believe Browne committed any fouls during the bout, which took place in a preliminary-card bout at the The Pearl at the Palms Resort Casino in Las Vegas. During the Spike TV broadcast, cameras showed McSweeney bleeding from his head shortly after Browne followed him to the ground and began striking. It appears at least one of Browne's elbow strikes may have caused the cut. According to McMahon, backstage prior to the fight, referee Kim Winslow explained illegal strikes to McSweeney and highlighted an area "two knuckles beyond the ear" as foul territory.

from what i remember watching mcsweener just got dominated. i dont remember a lot of illegal strikes. this kind of stuff is childish. he got owned straight up and crying about it he seems to be doing just make the loss look that much worse.

however in case i did miss some illegal blows i think the dec should still stand. if anything maybe the ref should be punished, not the fighter. its the refs job to stop these kind of things. if the ref didnt do their job its not really the fighters fault.

"[Browne] was curving his arm around and hitting him on the ear," Kizer said. "Not elbows – punches. You could tell Browne was going out of his way not to hit McSweeney in the back of the head.

"I've never seen a fighter go that much out of his way to make sure he didn't commit a foul."

This was kinda what I was thinking after reading the short blurb. There were probably a couple of strikes to the back of the head initially when McSweeney began turtling up, but that happens in pretty much every fight. After a couple of seconds, he was winging every punch around to hit him properly in the face. There was nothing that I haven't seen on probably every single fight card, since as long as I can remember. I don't think the appeal will will last 3 minutes on someone's desk.

If they were so illegal why weren't you complaining about them during the fight? Then again, I guess it's kind of hard to complain when a 6'7" man's fists are closing your mouth every time you open it. McSweeney should just take this loss and improve his ground game. Striking with Browne was a bad gameplan from the start.

Really bad sportsmanship by McSweeney and his camp here. Even if a couple of blows did land to the back of the head it was likely more because McSweeney was moving around than because his opponent was targeting the back of the head. The real reason for that rule is because you don't want fighters getting hit at the base of the neck where the spine meets the skull.

The cut on McSweeney was obviously on the skull, not the soft area at the base of the spine. Anything that hits the skull should be legal anyway. The reason they can't say "It's illegal to hit the base of the spine" is because that leaves too much room for accidents. Saying "It's illegal to hit the back of the head" insures that no one hits the spine. It's like saying it's illegal to hit the belly button but not the belly, just too precise.

Anyway, despite my ramble, I didn't see anything wrong with the fight and this is really just cry baby stuff from McSweeny.

Edit: what this really comes down to is how you define the back of the head. I was starring at that picture. If you go by the 'mo-hawk rule' then this is fine. If you go by the 'headphones rule' then this is questionable. I've never heard of the 2 knuckle rule before but it doesn't seem to make sense.

I saw one illegal elbow go to the back of the head which cut mcsweeney pretty bad. The corner exploded and you can hear them screaming that it was to the back of the head and they continued to do so for a good 30 seconds. one strike isn't enough to deduct the point, and I didn't see enough damage to stop the fight and let mcsweeney recover. Unless the fight was stopped by cut that's the only way the elbow really had an effect.

it looks really bad on the mcsweeney camp

theres almost no way to get a decision overturned. if somebody drove a car into the cage and ran their opponent over it would prolly still get called a ko

I was screaming about the illegal strikes as they happened. If you didn't see them you need to pay more attention to what is going on during the fights.
