His opponent at WEC 49, Jamie Varner, thinks so. "This is a really crazy fight because we're both wrestler/boxers, and I feel like where I lack, he exceeds, and where he lacks, I exceed. I feel like I'm definitely the better boxer and technical striker, but he hits really, really hard, but yet he's a better wrestler. He's nationally decorated, he's an Olympic alternate for Britain; I mean, he's no joke. Kamal Shalorus is the toughest guy you've never heard of."

Varner has good takedown defense and very good technical boxing. This is probably the worst style matchup for Shalrous out there, but Kamal's wrestling is legit world class, the kind that only a few mma fighters have, and it wouldn't be too surprising to see him catch the ankle on a low single and ride Varner around. Kamal's striking is kind of funny to watch because he cavemans everything and ridiculously over-commits. This should be a problem against Varner, who can stick a jab and combo up while keeping his head moving with the best of them. However, Varner does seem kind of prone to momentary lapses of focus. That could be huge against an opponent who throws every punch like the fate of the universe depends on it.

If Varner fights a smart fight and doesn't have a brain lapse like in his fights against Benson and Cerrone, it should be his. It has been a while since we've seen that out of Varner, though. Which makes it interesting.

I think Varner will do fine, he also has the reach and speed advantage....plus his wrestling is more adapted to MMA because of his experience.

I agree that Varner has some better experience putting it to use in the cage and IMO he has some of the best cage-adapted freestyle wrestling in the game.

I was thinking while reading and watching some previews that we've seen some epic olympic caliber Greco Roman wrestling matchups but we've never really seen epic olympic Freestyle wrestling matchups. Of the times when we have seen premiere freestyle wrestling matchups (Koscheck v. GSP for example) they have usually been pretty one sided.

Shalrous has impressed me in his fights. Granted, his boxing has looked rather sloppy but he seems to have something that works for him. I am massively looking forward to this fight and am inclined to give it to Shalrous because, as ncordless stated, it's been a long time since we've seen the Varner that would normally win this fight.

I think Varner has got to finish this quick because if he ends up on his back he will be grinnded out for a UD. Varner has to be the only 155er who has a tough time making it 3 rds his gas tank is weak IMO.

Kamal Shalorus is just now coming into his own as a fighter.

Varner should be able to use his wrestling enough to keep it standing, where he outboxes Kamal with ease, but with new fighters like Shalorus it's never easy to ascertain what new wrinkles they add during their time of big progress between each and every fight.

His effortless takedown defense is truly a thing of beauty.
