Newly minted UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio Rua's first title defense likely will be delayed due to a recent knee surgery. Rua was expected to face Rashad Evans later this year Dana White is unsure when the Brazilian champ will fight again. "He just got out of the hospital; it was a successful surgery," White said. "He had the surgery in [Los Angeles], and he's going to be doing all his therapy in (Las) Vegas. "So he'll be in Vegas for the next five weeks." White said Rua's injury occurred during the fight with Machida, though a report from ESPN's "MMA Live" the night of the May 8 event stated Rua's knee was already injured. "He got hurt in the fight," White asserted. No comment yet from Rua.

I really hate to say it. But I think his great career may be derailed by this perpetual injury. He looks like he's headed down the Ken Griffey Jr path. Amazing but who knows how good he would have been without injuries.

I don't believe that story one bit, he didn't do enough to injure his knee in that fight. I hope that it is just a cleaning of scar tissue, otherwise we're going to be back to Shogun when he entered the UFC.

Really? I doubt Shogun Rua is scared to fight anybody.
"He just got out of the hospital; it was a successful surgery," White said. "He had the surgery in [Los Angeles], and he's going to be doing all his therapy in (Las) Vegas.
"So he'll be in Vegas for the next five weeks."
Is that all he needs before he is ready to train again? Five weeks isn't a long lay-off.

Im sure Rua just wanted to to be covered by the insurance, because if it happened prior to the fight, its his expense to pay. Franklin Mcniel was probably right.
I think this does hurt Rua's chances at showing up 100%, but if its not too long of a layoff it might not matter.

This stinks imo. After his 2 fights with Machida, Rua proved he is the best lhw in the world and became my fav fighter. Although I think it is possible Rashad could lay on Rua for 5 rds, I doubt Rua is ducking anyone. If this is the same knee (I could'nt figure out from article) Rua could be out for good. Hopefully Rua won't fight if he is injured still, so he avoids reinjuring the knee over and over, and be sidelined for sure.

Nobody said scared. He's said twice who he wants to fight.

I take it you don't have any knee injury experience.

Shogun's had knee problems in the past and considering the amount of kickboxing he does I wouldn't doubt it continues to mess with him. Regardless I think he takes Rashad (so long as he doesn't gas) and definately don't think he is ducking!! I think his mentioning of wanting to fight A. Silva is just him trying to set up the future as Silva is obviously locked into things as the MW Champ. Set it up now before it's too late, you know.

Son of a bitch... not again.
If he's only doing a 5 week rehab stint it's doubtful it's the same injury as before. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I believe he tore an ACL or something of that nature before. 5 week rehab suggests something a bit more minor like a miniscus injury.

As a veteran of knee injuries, there's a myriad of things it could wind up being. Cleaning of scar tissue (as someone mentioned), miniscus, minor arthroscopic surgery, etc... Let's just hope he comes back. He's a great fighter.
