A middleweight bout between Nate Marquardt and Alessio Sakara will be part of UFC 116.

A source close to one of the competitors told MMAjunkie.com that bout agreements are in the process of being finalized and that the fight will be part of the night's televised main card. MMA reporter Joe Ferraro first reported the possibility of the fight on Twitter.

UFC 116 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and airs on pay-per-view.

I think if marquardt keeps in on the feet it will be pretty entertaining. Sakara is very underrated. He has won his last 3 and its time for a step up in competition. Marquardt should definetely be the favorite but imo its a good fight for both at this point in there careers.

This is a really strange match up and one I don't particularly care to see. Marquardt should be getting challenged to be put back into contention and I would like to see him fight a wrestler to prove that he's learned from his fight with Chael. If he loses it will be a disaster for him. A win doesn't do much except fortify what we already know about him.

For Alessio this is a great opportunity but I honestly can't see him winning this fight, barring rare circumstances.

I think the UFC is doing this so they can get another contender for the title after the Silva Sonnen fight. That or they are trying to finally get Sakara out of there. Sucks for them though because hes been on a role lately. To bad for Sakara because i think Marquardt will be the road block that stops his run.

statistics are a funny thing he has won his last three fights but he is 5-4 in his last nine fights so I would hardly say underrated. Marquardt is contender level and Sakara can be fun to watch two different levels and Marquardt will not have any trouble

Sakara's only weapon is his striking and his best bet is a KO punch but Marquardt has only been KO or TKOed once in his 11 year career and that was Anderson Silva

conclusion: this is a confidence booster fight for Nate the Great

What? If you want someone to lose you don't feed them James Irvin. Sakara can punch, but he has no chin or ground game. Nate by easy submission or GnP stoppage.

Um, i have to call BS. Sakara was not set up to lose to irvin. Irvin had a longlay-off, was recovering from injuries(& an addiction to painkillers), and was dropping down in weight to fight a striker way more technically sound than him at his best.

I saw this match-up and my jaw about hit the floor. This has no upside for Marquardt in the event of a win and devastating consequences should he lose. Actually, the first that came to my mind when I saw this announcement with regard to Sakara was a line from Baseketball..."the lord must really have it in for that little boy."

I'm not really a big fan of this match-up either but Sakara is on a 3 fight win streak and Nate was just completely dominated in his last outing...

The way I see it, if not Sakara then who? Most of the fighters close to Nate's level are tied up with other fights.

And, with Sakara on a streak they had to step up his level of competition.

I think it's going to be a pretty sick fight. Unless Nate is gun shy from the last fight, if he attacks like he has been since the Silva loss, then this will be a sick ass 1 round brawl. I expect Nate to just bum rush him and this just being a slugfest til somebody drops, I just see Nate overwhelming him but getting knocked pretty good a few times, but still overwhelm and take him out later in the 1st. Definitely wouldn't suprise me if he took the easy road and took it to the ground which I think would last rounds though but he still wouldn't being getting rocked in a slugfest.
