Each time B.J. Penn prepares to defend his Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight belt, the question arises: with a win, will he return to the welterweight division where he once held the title?

Penn takes on Frankie Edgar in the co-main event of UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi on April 10, and if the Hawaiian comes away with the win, a move to the 170-pound division is something he’s considering.

“If everything goes well on April 10, I definitely would consider moving up to 170. Not that I’m – not that it’s 100-percent guaranteed,” Penn said recently.

“If I do make that move I’m going to move slow. I’m not going to try to rush anything,” he added. “Maybe I would think about it more as testing the waters. I’d talk to Dana and see if he would want me to vacate the belt, but maybe try do something like Anderson (Silva) is doing, test the waters, see how everything is going and see how everything plays out.”

if Bj can beat Fitch or Kos, give him another shot. Bj was not in good shape either time he fought ww, and now he is, so it will be a better fight this time imo.

I wouldn't mind seeing him move up like Anderson is doing but I think its a bit pointless if he's thinking of doing it full time.
He is without doubt the best LW in the world but he has little chance against GSP who is now one of the bigger WW's so chasing the WW belt and giving up the LW belt just means he'll be without a belt for the end of his career.
I love BJ's fight anyone attitude though, the guy is a savage.

This needs to happen, he has no more competition left after Edgar....maybeeeeeeeee Maynard but after that I'm sure BJ could careless about fighting Kenny again after what happened in the first fight.

BJ would be more challenged at 170lbs.

He should definitely move up once in a while but not vacate his title because then he definitely screws himself lol. Plus I'd like to see him beat Maynard again.

I'd like to see what BJ could do if he actually spent a year growing in to 170. It's a Fitch fight I might actually watch, but I'd like to see him against Swick for sure, and Hardy would be a good match, I don't think anybody wants to see him fight at 155 anymore.

I think bj is the best LW of all time and a wud love to see him at ww but not full time because at the end of the tunnel is gsp.there wud be lots of fights at ww for bj like fitch.hardy.kos.thiago.swick.and what about a rubber match with matt hughes.A hope gsp takes a leaf out of b.j book and steps up weight then if b.j is settled at ww he may be able to get the belt back.

I guess Penn is really determined to not be the greatest lightweight ever. I mean gee, either, defend the lightweight title over 5 times against top competition that you know you can beat and become one of the greatest champions ever in the UFC, or vacate the title after 3 defenses and have your legacy challenged by the next generation of fighters as some amazing fighter decides to stay disciplined and defend 5-7 times.

Stupid, it's too rare an oportunity to pass up.

I would like to see BJ compete at 170 against some WWs not named GSP and I would say that if he can beat a mid-tier and a couple upper-tier fighters then he should another shot at GSP. But I think BJ should have to beat Fitch or Kos to earn the title and prove he can deal with the wrestlers at 170.
Also, I'd like to see BJ vs Paulo Thiago.

If he does go up to WW they should give him a fight with Matt Serra that would kind of be a cool rematch I bet they could actually hype it pretty good.

I would like to see how things went if BJ, GSP, and Anderson ALL moved up one division from where they are. It would shake things up big time and create a lot of exciting fights.

honestly, some of you guys are talking about how he shouldnt vacate the title, but if he wants to fight at 170 whats the point of keeping the 155 strap? it would just make it so he cant completely commit to 170 cause he always has to have his mind on his next fight being at 155 and he has to be able to make it. plus, if he has a setback and wants to go back to 155 i can guarantee that he would get an immediate title shot. either way any fight he has at 155 would be for the belt, might as well not have something holding him back if it doesnt really benefit him, other than to get consecutive title defenses which someone was talking about, and is assanine. if penn moved up to 170, kenflo died in a car crash, and gray maynard won the belt and defended it 7 times nobody would think he was better than bj

gsp is too scared of scarring his record and ruining his "legacy" to go up a class, but yet sooo many people still consider him the best p4p in the world??? bj and anderson could easily just dominate their own weight classes forever and do the same, but they choose to look for more competition, more exciting fights, put more on the line, in my opinion they r the 2 p4p best fighters in the world. forget fedor, forget gsp, try facing the best fighters outside your own weight class and then talk, or in fedors case try facing the best in your own weight class period.

besides id love to see a rematch between gsp and bj with no greasing involved. thats another thing that everybody chooses to overlook, like 5 or 6 other top level fighters that have faught gsp have complained of the same greasing tactics, but no1 did nething about it. not until he was caught on tape greasing against bj. how can you be considered the best p4p when you have been cheating to win against every top level fighter you have faced???

and i know i may sound bitter or wutever and a gsp hater, i do think gsp is 1 of the best fighters out there, i just think the guy is shady and very fake on camera and people just buy into everything he says without question. id love to see bj vs gsp 3, or a gsp vs anderson, even at a catchweight or something, id bet against gsp on both. but my bet is that we wont ever see such a thing, cuz gsp aint up to it.

i say go bj, if theres no1 left in the lw division take another shot at ww, and id pick him to win against any ww
