Thiago Alves will be required to undergo minor surgery to correct the brain "irregularity" that prompted his withdrawal from UFC 111. He's scheduled to have the procedure Wednesday. No word on a potential return date but he could be cleared to resume training in as little as 2 weeks.

I was REALLY looking forward to this fight. More so than any other fight on the card.

I think we can all agree that its a shame that the fight is not happening, but I'm sure that we can all also agree that its better that the fight is not happening knowing that a potentially worse situation could have arose from the fight taking place. Who knows what that "irregularity" could have spawned if Alves took a hard blow to the head. I really don't want to think about it too much.

Alves was able to attend a special Q&A in Manhattan last night, which did serve as an update on what's going on:
He says if all goes well Wednesday, he'll return to Florida Friday then a "90% chance" he'll be medically cleared to resume training.
He's targeting UFC 114 in May as his return date.
Diagnosis was a malformation on the left side of his brain. It is not career-ending.
No aneurysm or bleeding was discovered.
When irregularities were discovered in the MRIs and CAT scan Alves sent in from his Florida home, he was given an immediate medical suspension by the NJSACB, resulting in the fight being called off. No word on how long it is.

He should be suspended well past May. This isn't a cut in training, it's a brain abnormality.

The Neurologist says it's a non-invasive procedure that will fix him and he will be all healed in 3 weeks, ready to get back to training. I think a Neurologist's opinion is about the best one we are going to get.
