Less than 72 hours before his chance at redemption against Jon Fitch (21-3 MMA, 11-1 UFC), Brazilian slugger Thiago Alves (16-6 MMA, 9-3 UFC) was told he wouldn't get the chance to step inside the cage.

An irregularity in a pre-fight CT scan was the culprit, but Alves' agent, Malki Kawa of First Round Management, told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that his client is aiming for a quick return.

"Thiago is very disappointed," Kawa said. "But he remains in good spirits and hopes to get back in the cage very quickly."

Alves was expected to meet Fitch on the main card of Saturday night's UFC 111 event in Newark, N.J. With the removal of the matchup, a bout between Kurt Pellegrino and Fabricio Camoes has been promoted to the pay-per-view portion of the broadcast.

Kawa said the CT scan showed "an irregularity" in Alves' brain, but there was little additional information to share.

See the news post in the News Forum. It's Fitch vs. Saunders now.

I hope Thiago is okay. I would have the doctor look into his weight cutting as a cause. Cutting lots of weight can mess up your heart, arteries, dehydration etc. I hope he returns soon.

Well whats the matter? Like is it just a short term thing? I don't know really anythign about Brains so I don't know if he did a cat scan in a week or 2 if it'd be any different. I don't know, like I said I don't know **** about brains hahaha

but if Fitch storms through saunders like I hope he does to quiet all these fans and critics that say he's boring or can't finish fights when he's done it plenty of times by the way, then hopefully him and Alves can still go right to a rematch maybe even at Abu Dhabi or 113 IMO I think really could use that fight even though it already has Kimbo, Shogun-Machida 2, Kos-Daley, but damn that would be a hell of a way to cap that card. DAMN.
