UFC's Thiago "Pitbull" Alves will not fight at Saturday's UFC 111, because a CAT Scan shows an irregularity in his brain ... TMZ has learned.

Looks like it's for real. Here is Kevin Iole's report from yahoo.

That sucks...

I hope he's okay.

Unless they have someone on standby, Fitch has to be scratched as well.

I guess my decision on whether or not to order it has been made. I'll be going to Buffalo Wild Wings now.

By the way...I guess you *do* learn something new every day. I had absolutely no idea that they did brain scans during the pre-fight screenings.

I didn't know that either. Guess it's a good thing they do. Nobody, especially a fighter want to mess around with artery problems, especially in the brain. Hopefully it's just a small blockage that can be cleared up with some medicine.

This sux bad. I hope Thiago's alright. I wanted to see these two fight, because although Alves hasnt fought since GSP (his wrecking of Koscheck and many others) makes me consider him the number 3 ww, behind Fitch and GSP. Now Fitch will get a rematch and his last fights have been lackluster to say the least. I mentioned in another thread that Fitch should give up going for the rear naked and ground and pound his opponents for the tko. The reason is everyone (grappler and striker alike) have excellent rear naked choke defense in the UFC, and Fitch spends 3 full round riding the back trying to choke, when he should take advantage of the position. If you cant get the choke right away, pound him out til they r not defending anymore.

My controversial idea would be to give Jon Fitch BJ Penn this saturday, I bet BJ would take the fight, and prolly out box fitch or submit him imo.

How do fighters like Mark Coleman pass the screenings and Thiago doesn't. That's just pure misfortune. So unlucky for a kid his age to have to deal with that and possibly end his career.

I'm by no means his biggest fan, but he's fun to watch and I'd love to see him back in the Octagon.

I hear/read Fitch may still fight.....even at 185 if need be....
I'm thankful that the scan was conducted and that Alves is out of the fight because the alternative could be very unhealthy/lethal....

The card is still going to be amazing imo, and i can't wait to be there live. but my thoughts go out to Thiago and his family in hopes that it isn't as serious as it is starting to seem based on the reactions of those close to the situation.

BJ is scheduled to fight in 2 weeks. There's no way in hell he'd take this. There's no way in hell the UFC would *allow* him to take the fight and have the Abu Dhabi card take such a huge hit.

Considering the usual late replacement is team mate Josh Koscheck, I don't see who they're bringing in for this one, unless they pull someone off the UFN 21 card.

Junkie says Pellegrino-Camoes has been promoted to PPV as a replacement. Also, Fitch is now off. No replacement can be found in time. He'll be moved to a later card.
