"The elbow that ended Brandon Vera's bout with Jon Jones at UFC on Versus 1 also did serious damage to Vera's face. Jeremy Botter first reported that Vera's face was broken in three places, and Cagewriter sources confirmed that Vera can't board a plane due to the injuries. "

Considering Jones has the longest reach in the UFC, he could probably tuck in his fists and fight with his elbows without giving up much of a reach advantage lol.

That elbow was ******* nasty. I felt bad when I saw it, at first I thought he cranked him in the ear and thats why he was covering up so fast and rolling away, but holy **** did it ever look worse when it showed the actual impact.

I figured something was up just from the sound of the elbow strike alone and the fact that Vera's face instantly swelled. Rogan kept saying he was holding his eye but to me it looked like he was holding his ear. I wonder how long the break is? That's a very dangerous injury because of the risk of a subdural hematoma. Insane elbows!

His elbows are very dangerous weapons. Jones avoided the 12 to 6. i doubt he will make that mistake again.
I thought it was crazy when Vera got a point taken, than kicked him again in the face. I had a feeling he would do it again, and he kicked again. The second kick must have hit Jon Jones shoulder not face like it appeared to be, or he would have been deducted an additional point.
I also thought that Jon Jones getting a choice of positions was interesting. I never saw that before, but its a good idea imo.

I thought it was crazy when Vera got a point taken, than kicked him again in the face.
I'd have to watch it again, but I didn't think Jones was considered 'down' when he got kicked the 2nd time. I thought he was standing. Did he have a hand down?

Actually, I just watched it again. He was *not* down. He's standing and bending over while Vera has wrist control.
Picture 1 is a still shot of the kick.
Picture 2 is *immediately* after the kick. Jones' right knee is *not* on the ground. He was bending over when the upkick landed and the kick caused him to go to his knees.

I didn't think so either but i didn't rewatch it to verify.
I kept waiting for a sweet sub off the back and more kicks from vera standing but Jones looked really good as usual. That is a scary injury.

The 1st kick was 100% illegal. The 2nd (pictured above) was legal.
