Former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight Roger Huerta (20-3-1 MMA, 0-0 Bellator) is set to test his mettle in Bellator Fighting Championships' season two eight-man lightweight tournament.

Sources close to the situation confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the popular lightweight received his formal release from the UFC this week, which opened the door to finalize a deal with the upstart promotion.

Bellator has called a video press conference for Monday at 3 p.m. ET that will stream live at Bellator.com.

Huerta is the seventh 155-pound competitor added to Bellator’s second season, which kicks off April 8 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The twelve-week season airs live on FOX Sports Net affiliates on Thursday nights, and highlights packages air on NBC and Telemundo over the weekend. Tournament participants in the featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, and middleweight classes battle for the right to face season one's tournament champions.

I thought his acting career was about to blast off. I think he'll really wreck his way through the tournament and into an explosive fight with Alvarez.

I'm really hoping an Alverez/Huerta fight shakes down and comes to either KC or Chicago. I'd make the trip to either city for that.

My thoughts exactly. Huerta/Alvarez in a 5 round championship bout makes me excited.

I figure that Eddie will bring it regardless, but Roger's a bit questionable to me. I mean, if he does his thing like he did in most of his UFC fights, it should be a strong contender for FOTY. If he's more timid like he was against Maynard, then I think Alvarez' aggression would turn it into a competitive but overall clear victory for the reigning Bellator LW champ.

Wow, This is huge for Bellator. SF missed this guy.....how? Well actually Bellator might have a better stable of fighters at Lw than SF???? I still can't believe that Dana and the boys let him get away. Arrogant pricks!

I don't think that this has anything to do with them "letting get away"... Bellator has a very strong latino pulse and they push very hard for their mexican fanbase. Should Roger go deep into the tourney he's going to make as much in three fights over three months then he would in over a year with the UFC.

Not to mention the the fact that every single one of Roger's fights is going to be nationally televised on Fox Sports Net, then replayed weekly on Telemundo (or Televisa, I forget which one) and on the late night NBC spot that SF used to have.

Long and short, he's going to make more in endorcements with Bellator too. They don't have the restrictive sponsor policy that the UFC has which leaves all doors open. He'll have a chance at games like the EA Sports MMA game and still retain his likeness too. And he'll be able to get Bellator-approved fights outside of the promotion when they arn't running there "seasons". All while being marketed to the Latino/Mexican demographic trail that the UFC was blazing a year or two back.

I think this was a bottom line, dollars and cents decision on the part of Roger Huerta and it makes pefect sense to me. Props to Bellator for getting this done, props to Mr. Huerta for helping push the competitive landscape of the sport by signing with a rival promotion.
