Athletes and Knowing When To Say Goodbye

Here's an article I wrote about the need for athletes to know when to hang up the gloves. It takes a look at Muhammed Ali and Chuck Liddell and compares their current conditions.

I think that no matter how much you tell a fighter they're done or to "hang em up," most of em will not listen. Its their lives and their love of the sport. At this point in their careers I dont think they really care what people tell them. They love to fight, and will most likely do so til THEY say theyre done. Not anyone else

You can definitely tell the difference between chuck then and chuck now. The videos are a really nice touch and the whole article was well done.

But another obvious indication is how much easier it is to knock chuck out now than it was before. He has always been known for taking a good shot, now he seems to have a glass jaw. That is an indication of brain damage.

Luckily, there are some studies that seem to indicate you can recover from pugilistic dementia with time. Lets hope when Chuck wants to retire isn't to far after when Chuck should retire.

Great read guy. and i dont read alot, lol. the only thing that could have made it better would be some interviews of Ali before and after the dementia.

I thought about that, but I didn't want to make people cry.Just looking at him from The Thrilla in Manilla period to when he faced Larry Holmes is a stark difference. It makes you almost ill to think that the man then got into a ring and spent another 60 minutes with Larry Holmes and Trevor Brebriek.

Like I said in the article,I'm a libertarian. If Liddell and Ortiz want to keep fighting, more power to them.Just don't go crying to the gov't for more oversight and commisions when they end up drewling in a cup in ten or fifteen years. You let Liddell mix it up with one or two more decent strikers, and he will end up in as bad or worse shape as Joe Frazier is now.God forbid he ends up like Ali.

Thanks for the compliments on the article.I apprechiate them.

Brian.

that article was good. if chuck developed good tecnique and didnt depend on his fast feet and slowing refelexes, he would be good again. takedowns, kicks and block punches

i know i sound like coach, but even rogan says roy jones and hopkins had differenr careers cuz ther styles different.

is there a link between pugilism and parkinsons, oe are they different but also similiar?

to also repond to the guy who said fighters won't listen to peolple who say old fighters are done.

your right, and I bet the more you tell them they cant fight, the more they wanna prove everyone wrong.

whether they r done or not, coleman and chuck have both said they wanna prove everyone wrong. I am similiar, in that I get motivated when told I cant do something.
