During last weekend's UFC 110, George Sotiropoulos turned in a star-making performance in a win over Joe Stevenson, but the victory also caused a minor controversy by some who questioned Sotirpoulos' fight attire as flouting the rules.

Sotiropoulos wore fight shorts, compression shorts, knee sleeves and ankle sleeves that left little of his legs exposed, causing some to think he exposed a loophole in the rule prohibiting grappling pants.

Although the bout took place in Australia, MMA Fighting spoke with Nevada state athletic commission executive director Keith Kizer, who oversaw a previous UFC event in Nov. 2009 during which Sotiropoulos wore the same gear.

I don't see anything wrong with the equipment that George wore or with fight pants for that matter. If a guy want to have less slipping in his guard he should be allowed to wear Gi Pants. The current rules obviously favor wrestlers (top game guys) and strikers who are seeking to avoid submissions. I think outlawing no slip rubber makes sense, but I disagree that Gi Pants or leg wear offer any advantage. Rather, it is an advantage to the other fighter that such gear isn't allowed.

I had a feeling Stevenson would go for a leglock in that fight when he saw the ankle wraps...I'm surprised how amazing George was on the ground though, very impressive.

even if it was borderline fight gear, it didnt change the fact that George was ALL OVER Stevenson. he was fairly impressive but not champion caliber. i think Sotiropoulos will have a hard time getting very far into the 155lb ranks.
