The question going into last night was could Gray Maynard earn a title shot at BJ Penn at UFC 112? The Answer appears to be no. While nothing is definite yet, based on Maynard's split decision win it looks like Frank Edgar will get the next shot at UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn in Abu Dhabi. Edgar seems to have emerged as the frontrunner for the next shot, even though he does have one loss on his UFC record-Maynard.

Especially after that performance last night, I think this is a good decision. I think Frankie has a much better shot of beating BJ. He's faster and has better boxing. Neither one can take BJ down so this should be decided on the feet.

Also, I think Nate Diaz got robbed. I picked Gray but there's no way he won that fight.

He won the 1st and 2nd rounds, this coming from a Diaz fan.

agreed- that maynard won 1- and 2 but lost 3 - 3- was not a 10-8 round- IMHO
Diaz doesnt hit hard enough?? known more for crisp punches and great submissions....takedowns?? definately think he needed to try and take gray down...

I agree. If Lawlor/Simpson round one wasn't 10-8 there's no way in hell Diaz/Maynard round three was.

I think this is real dumb. I think BJ & GSP should fight a 3rd time until both divisions have a legitimate contender come out. Both Maynard & Edgar are going to get freaking murdered. Maynard would last longer I believe because he's a bigger wrestler and I think it's ridiculous to say Edgar's boxing is better just because he knocked his last opponent out, I think their boxing is about the same and this is coming from a big Edgar fan. But I think Edgar would get stopped brutally in the 1st, where I could see Maynard go 2 or 3 rounds.

I think at the least BJ can wait til the summer to let Edgar and Maynard fight off to see who gets crushed. I love Edgar but I think he needs to be beat Florian and/or Maynard before he gets Penn. I'd love to see him pull it off but I still think he's far from ready. Diego I think would beat Edgar not to mention I think he can take a lot more punishment too. And look what happened to him. I think we need Eddie Alvarez and Shinya in the UFC and beat some top guys to get to BJ because as far as I'm concerned IMO, BJ Penn is unbeatable right now at 155.

Maynard already beat Edgar; there'd be no reason to have them fight for a shot at the title. Not saying Edgar vs. Penn is the right move; but no sense in a Maynard/Edgar rematch at this time. I agree that it's hard to imagine anyone at 155 competing with BJ.

I agree, I just think it's just a big old mess that keeps contradicting itself. Maynard beat Edgar and hasn't loss, but Edgar's going to get the shot over him just because he knocked out somebody Maynard IMO would have KO'd too? I love Edgar but I dont wanna see him get killed. A rematch might not be the best option but then how about one of them gets Kenflo and the other gets Sherk, the 2 people IMO who have the only legit shot at BJ. Whoever wins the most impressively I think should get it. I know Edgar already beat Sherk so that just proves even more it's a big mess, I think he should beat Kenny then. IDK it's just a big mess, nobodies gonna come out satisfied, just hopefully we get some solid fights after this whole mess!

See Rampage vs Wandy Silva I'm not saying it'd be a different result but it's a smart business move UFC wise, because they can market this with the whole "grease" thing. There a huge name and would always generate huge money, see what their doing with Liddell-Ortiz. This make even more sense though. And there both too dominant in there divisions so it would free up time. I think GSP would still win but im just saying it'd free up some time to let a legit contender come out in each division.

I have Maynard ranked #2 and Edgar ranked #3, I still would rather see Edgar fight B.J. based off of Maynards performance last night.

total agree mate, ufc eitha need shinya etc to flesh up the 155 devision, or bj needs to move up, even if its not to fight gsp strait away, stil plenty good fights for him at 170! but lets face it no one gana be a decent challenge at 155!

Gray would've been next in line, but recent performances over Matt Veach and Sean Sherk really put him in the front of the pack. Bully blew his title shot with a lackluster performance last night!
