FiveOuncesofPain.com recently had the chance to catch up with Head Jiu-Jitsu Instructor over at Xtreme Couture, Neil Melanson, to gather his thoughts on the Xtreme Couture trained Gray Maynard’s UFC Fight Night showdown with Nate Diaz scheduled for January 11, and while we were able to gather quite a bit of insight into the Bully’s keys to victory in the upcoming rematch, 5 Oz. also learned of one UFC lightweight’s reported reluctancy to face a particular foe with an extremely similar style.

According to Melanson, Maynard has had an itch to throw down with former UFC lightweight title holder Sean Sherk for some time now, but as the saying goes: It takes two to tango.

“I know Gray has been wanting to fight Sean Sherk, and I know they tried to make that fight happen, but according to Gray’s people, they said that Sherk turned it down numerous times,” said Melanson during a recent conversation with FiveOuncesofPain. “I could see why, just because it’s not really a good fight for Sherk; going against another stud wrestler that can box.”

If these two fought Sherk would win, so what would be the point in dodging him really. Sherk is just a bigger stronger version of Maynard IMO.

sherk isn't close to maynard when it comes to boxing. edgar picked sherk apart and we know maynard is at least as good as edgar.

I think it's the opposite actually.

Maynard is larger and a superior wrestler.

You're all too full of Maynard. I'd take Sherk by UD.

Gray would outpoint Sherk standing and would end up on the good side of the takedowns most of the time. I would take Gray UD. As for Sherk "dodging" him .....its all speculation. Sherk is a former champ and that said I give him the credit that he deserves and say he isnt dodging anyone. He has always been a game opponent.

Maynard is the biggest lightweight in the UFC, and probably the best wrestler in the Div.

I may be a little high on Maynard (Homegrown Fighter from Las Vegas = one of my favorite fighters) but what has Sherk done lately??? Nothing impressive, I was just thinking about how well he would do at Featherweight. (not that he is too small for LW just his height is better suited for FW)

Maynard for sure, to be honest I think Seans days in the UFC are soon to be ending, once he loses to Guida...the UFC let him go once, I think they may do it again this year

I'd have to disagree with you on who's the better boxer. Maynard had the gameplan Sherk should've used. Sherk has been struck down by the Gurgel virus lately and believe me Sherk could've done to Edgar what Maynard did. You didnt see Maynard standing with Edgar for 3 rounds or really at all. Most likely Edgar would KO Maynard in a K-1 or straight kickboxing match. Sherk nearly stood with Edgar for 2 1/2 rounds.

Sherk is right up there with Jens Pulver as champ, and Pulver might of been the better champ. Sherk is a modern day fossil, he would be a tough fight for Maynard, but I don't think he's any where near Maynard as a wrestler at this point in time.
