Takanori Gomi, once considered to be one of the best lightweight fighters in the world, has signed a multi-fight contract with the UFC. MMAFighting.com learned of the acquisition from sources on Friday.
No word on when and where Gomi will make his debut for the UFC. The organization has yet to officially announce the signing.

Slightly strange signing for the UFC. Gomi hasn't exactly been lighting up the lightweight rankings recently.

And to think if he had just signed after PRIDE went out he could've fought BJ again to unify the PRIDE and UFC belts. Before BJ started taking strength and conditioning programs with Marv. Now he's nowhere near deserving of that shot at BJ, I think he still has some fight in him to get some wins here or he would've avoided signed with Strikeforce imo.

Either the UFC is going to give him some easy wins, or throw him to the wolves. I don't see them signing him to be a mid-carder, and he can't hang with the guys at the top anymore.

Gomi will be a gigantic 155'er if he can cut that much anymore. I think his boxing skills will allow for some exciting matchups, even if he has not shown signs of pushing for the top of the ranks for a long time now.
I like how the UFC are padding their rosters as they are increasing the amount of events they hold. Gomi probably has the most decorated resume at lightweight in the short history of MMA, at least until Penn surpasses him pretty soon, and this pickup's not bad at all.

Would love to see him fight Spencer Fisher for his first bout if he could drop to 155.

Geuss UFC is really pushing to go to japan. but they'll need a couple of more japanese stars if they want to suceed. Aoki and Kawajiri wont leave Japan IMO. The money they are throwing at them is alot.

I think he makes 155 and if he beats 2 mid-level fighters he will be in line for a title shot.

Jesse Forbes isn't tearing up the middleweight rankings. I don't see an issue with signing Gomi if they're bringing Forbes back.

It's not so much about having Gomi in the UFC as it is about keeping him OUT of strikeforce. Preventative measures.

They brought Forbes back in to fill in for an injury replacement of his own teammate Steve Steinbeiss....completely different situation than signing Gomi.
While I like the signing, the UFC has done some really strange things in the past 6 months.....I'm ok w/ the Gomi signing but for a guy who's lost some of his past few fights, it doesn't look good for the UFC to sign him when they are cutting fighters who lose 2 in a row, yet sign a guy who's 2-2 in his last 4 fights, his 2 wins coming against no namers. Not to mention, BJ already beat that ass so I just don't really see the point besides trying to finally find a Japanese fighter that will excel in the states.
