Relief overshadowed joy in Gilbert Melendez’s successful bid to unify the Strikeforce lightweight title against Josh Thomson. In a fight certain to be on the short list for Fight of the Year, Melendez was smarter and sharper than his first meeting with Thomson in June 2008 – where he lost the title and took the interim strap waiting for Thomson to heal from multiple injuries – and took a unanimous decision nod for a second turn as undisputed champion at Saturday’s “Evolution.”

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. Melendez seems to be a pretty solid fighter but I think fighters like, Penn, Edgar, Florian and maybe even Sanchez would make him eat his words. With that being said though, I would definitely love to see him in the cage with those guys.

he says that now but when strikeforce folds, melendez will be in the ufc they have good lightweights too, i gotta say with the dominance of penn, i do think the ufc needs to bring in some new talent like they did with belfort to the middleweight class this year and lil nog to light heavy

I was thinking about adding Maynard to the list to be honest. His style has been a little boring in the past though. I guess that's why I didn't mention him. Terrible reason, but I just wouldn't like to see Melendez on his back for 3 rounds. With that being said though, I could definitely see Maynard trying to change his image up and stand and bang with Melendez, but in that case I see him losing.
