UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta testified Wednesday at a House Judiciary Committee hearing on piracy of live sports broadcasting over the Internet, and he said the UFC is potentially losing tens of millions of dollars because people are illegally streaming UFC pay-per-views online.

"Just last month, the broadcast of UFC 106 from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, had over 271 unauthorized streams with over 140,000 views, and those are only the ones that our anti-piracy team and consultants identified," Fertitta told the committee. "There were likely more streams that we simply couldn't find."

Just to put that in perspective, that likely cost UFC over $6 million in PPV revenue. Reminder for those people who complain fighters don't get paid enough: When you don't pay, they don't get pay. We pay part of what they earn.

It's a necessary evil when you run a business. Otherwise, you're not a smart business owner.

Right now I'm in the UK so its free. But I can see why Lorenzo was pissed. They'll eventually find a way to shut down the streams but as the great Joe Rogan says "You can't stop the internet, baby"

One could argue that most of the 140,000 people watching on a stream would have not watched at all if it weren't for the stream.

Is it not better to let a financially strapped college student become a hardcore UFC fan watching streams, and ultimately spending his money down the road on PPV's and tickets. Or would the UFC rather that those who can't afford PPV's migrate to sports less taxing on the wallet?

If more and more people are deciding not to shell out for the UFC's PPV cards maybe they should look more towards strengthening their cards, and worry a little less about people watching choppy delayed broadcasts of their product.

Technically they are ways to stop the streams but the copyrights owners would need to make deals with the ISP's to have deep packet inspection enabled on their customers traffic but in Canada at least its still illegal. Sorry guys i work in that field

As of now they do not have the resources to do it so enjoy streaming guys.

This is a good point, as well.

I used to watch the illegal streams myself but earlier this year, after some bad streaming experiences among other things, I decided to go legal thanks to Yahoo and others offering online PPV. It hasn't been perfect but more often than not it's been worth it, the viewing experience is better.

I go to Buffalo Wild Wings and watch every PPV for free. Unfortunately, not everyone has a BW3's close to them.

I can't stand watching a choppy stream that freezes every 20 seconds because so many other people are watching. I'd rather *not* watch if that's what I have to resort to.

One could also argue that a good chunk of the 140,000 people *would* have gone somewhere to watch but knew that they could just watch it for free online so they decided to just stay home. I did that once in the past when I didn't feel like leaving the house (Griffin/Rampage) and actually regretted it because the stream I was viewing cut out just before the decision was announced.

Really given the quality of most streams there is no better tool driving people to PAY for shows.

The only thing I watch via stream is the occasional WEC event when TSN2 doesn't pick it up
